  1. Any ideas?

I seem to be starting from Langdale all to often recently... I fancy a
change. Can anybody recomend a nice exposed scamble with an interesting walk
in preferably, not starting from or near Langdale and it's surrounding
    hills?

Although, I might find myself missing the finishing pint at the ODG. hmm...

    Cheers,

    Nathan

    Blencathra via Sharp Edge?
You can still end up at the pub.

Cam Crag Ridge up Langstrath. Nice stream scenery at the start, the
scramble isn't exposed as in huge drops as I remember but there's a few
pretty much straight up bits that you wouldn't want to fall off.

I can't recommend a scramble, as I get vertigo 6" off the ground, but
I understand the problem: I have the same one.

To some extent, though, I think it depends upon where people live. I
approach the Lakes along the M6 from the south, and it's easy to "get
in" via Langdale. Other routes in, e.g. Borrowdale or Wasdale, take
    much longer to get to.

Have you considered driving up to Grasmere, walking up to Grisedale
Tarn and taking it from there?

I normally get back to the ODG mid morning, so don't actually pop in.
If you're up there often then maybe a bunch of us can get together at
some stage for a weekend, or at least for a drink? 🙂

    Best wishes,

Or down in Scales Tarn for a quick dip if you're not careful. 🙂

  6. Hi Nathan,

What about Pinnacle Ridge - starting from Patterdale and up on to
    St.Sunday to Fairfield?

This is my first post to this group - you may be interested in looking

You've got some excellent photos there, Sean.

I've never done Striding Edge or Swirral Edge and keep meaning to get
up there sometime but have never been able to get a sensible answer
from anyone about just what it is like. If your photos are true to
life then I think I *just might* be able to walk along the path just
down from the ridge (with a blindfold and a bottle of Scotch.)

Not difficult, really. One or two tricky bits, and care is needed. But
you'll see plenty of families doing it. My missus has done both edges,
no problem, and she's nervous where exposure is concerned - wouldn't
    do Crib Goch.

Why? Do you keep getting arrested? Oh, I see what you mean!

    (Sorry)

I think I will do the Helvellyn area next year. If I plan things
carefully I should be able to give myself time to build in an escape
route if I bottle out. I know that means I'll probably have to
retrace my steps ..... but that's better than having a panic attack
    half way across Striding Edge.

I have a couple of friends who keep saying that we'll go up there
together ... so perhaps now is the time to remind them and do it.

  11. Hi Judith,

Thanks for that. Striding and Swirral should be no problem, theres an
easier path to the side if you don't fancy walking the arete.

Last time I did Striding Edge, I thought the bit getting down on to it from
Helvellyn was dangerously loose, steep and nasty but maybe there's a better
route further along because I slanted down as soon as possible. It
wouldn't be as bad going up.

It's a pleasant and popular day out. At weekends there is usually
someone around who'd give moral support if you needed it - it's not a
    big deal, honestly.

Crowded would be a better word.
I was "whipper in" with a party of about 20 mostly novices, and only one
chickened out. I had to escort her down to the tarn to be picked up later.

Very nice! Websites with usefull content are all too lacking these days.
I've only had a quick look so far as I'm at work, I'll sneak 5 minute
snippets of it throughout the day ;o)
    Well done that man.

What about if you started on some really easy stuff on a very tight top
rope? That way, even if you became all dizzy you could just "slump" onto the
rope. Your eyes/brain are used to seeing the ground about 6 ft away, when
you climb, it's seeing the ground thinking "WTF, how the hell do I know how
far away that is, sod it, I'll just go dizzy instead". After you've done it
a good few times, your brain learns how to deal with it - hopefully. And if
not, you would have lost nothing.

Yeah, I'm up for that. Alan Hinkes has said he's been climbing mountains
with people he's met in a bar in Kathmandu, so I'm sure a few of us could
get together for walk in the lakes!

You could do Helvellyn from the Thirlmere side, starting at Swirls Car
    Park. This
then gives you the option of going down Swirral and up Striding from the
top and back up - or the other way round - or back the way you came if
you don't like the look of the edges.

It worked a treat, and it's a quieter and quicker route to Helvellyn
too. I had an uncongested walk on a very sunny day. The route from
    Glenridding was jammed.
