Nonsense.

But the question is do we. Merely eating "real food" is no guarantee of
getting all vitamins.

my opinion is that there's a sucker born every minute. "special"
vitamins for low carbers are an invention of marketing, and there is no
reason to spend the extra money.
Thanks folks.

Okay. However, my comment is a general one that was not meant to address
what you do. The fact is some may eat "real foods" and still not get all of
the RDA amounts, asssuming those are sufficient (and we know these
recommendations can be way off).

The other day I saw a commerical for one of these LC-specific vits. In this
commerical a normal looking woman was supposely on a LC diet. They depicted
her sitting at a table about to eat. The commentator mentioned how protein
consumption increases on a LC diet. then the showed the lady sitting in from
of a huge steak - one so big that I wouldn't attempt to eat it, even when I
weighed 367 lbs! Oh, and there was nothing else on the plate.
Why anyone would trust such a commerical to decide whether to buy their
vitamin is amazing to me. It is not surprising, however, given that anyone
eating that way on LC is probably clueless about it.
The only differences in supplementation I've heard of are with potassium and
iron. You may want to avoid supplements with iron in them. Potassium can
be checked in blood tests at the doctor's office. You should make sure you
need it, before adding potassium.
I often neglect fruits and vegetables, and I have yet to explore offal, so I
take a bunch of supplements:
Omega 3
CLA
Twinlab Dualtabs (multivitamin & multi-mineral)
Vitamin D
L-Glutamine
Culturelle (probiotic)
Vitamin C (timed release)
Low Carb Isopure (protein powder)
coconut milk
aspirin
glutathione
chromium picolinate
YMMV

There is the common repeated tales that indicate Artic explorers can eat
nothing but rabbits, and unlimited supply, and even though this is "real
food", they will still die from malnutrition.
"Real foods" isn't enough.
Foods containing all the essential nutrients are needed, and they can be
"real foods" because human history says that was possible, before
Kellogs helped make breakfast easier.
It is probably possible to eat nothing but manufactured foods, carefully
selected, and get all of the nutrients too.
It is also probably possible to eat nothing but manufactured foods,
narrowly selected, and lack some or many of the essential nutrients.
"Real Food" means very little by itself. As it actually means almost
nothing because there are so many thousand "real foods".
"When you sell to EVERYBODY, you actually sell to NOBODY." Famous saying
of advertisers to clients who never bother to know their real market.
Jim
Rabbits are 82% protein, which is to say, one may starve for lack of fat.
I don't think they have rabbits in the Artic, but I know what you mean.
One difference in the food of Arctic people is fermentation. I'm not about
to try rotted seal flipper, but the right microbes may produce needed
nutrients.

All the preceeding messages are fine and dandy wrt vitamins, but what
about calcium?
A diet of meat, veggies and fruits without much dairy will not supply
much calcium. Women need about 1200 mg of elemental calcium per day
for bone protection - not likely to be had on the Atkins diet without
supplementation.
For those who live in northern regions, Vit D is necessary as well in
order to absorb the calcium.

I buy Costco's "senior" vitamins. No iron, dirt cheap, and the Kirkland Brand
tests well when it comes to having what it should in it. For potassium, I use
lite salt. Those low-carb vitamin commercials [censored] me off too much to buy them.
"We love our low-carb lifestyle, but we know we're not getting everything we
need." Really? And you were when you followed the USDA food-pyramid guideline?
Amazing, since it's not possible. Tyson's chicken has a stupid radio ad on
around here. Talking about how perfect it is for low-carb dieters, since it's
high in protein and low in fat. Because that's all we eat, lots and lots of
protein. And we avoid fat like Susan Powders fans!

Calcium is abundant in non-dairy foods. Please, by all means post a day's menu
that provides 100% of all RDAs, following the food pyramid. I can following
Atkins induction foods.

Bear,
I wouldn't spend the extra money to buy the 'low carb' vitamins, IMO. Since
going lc, I take a generic multivitamin w/o iron, 500mg calcium, and
magnesium. I also took a fiber supplement (pill) for a while. I started
out on the Atkins diet, but while reading the book I was kind of put off by
all the subtle 'advertisements' suggesting the high priced Atkins' formulas
supplements.

I agree. There are a lot of good multi's to be found in health food stores
that are much better than the high-priced LC-formulated brands. I also
like them without iron since most people on LC plans are getting enough
iron already with the higher meat and dark green veggie consumption.
My favourite multi is called 'Super Multi - Iron Free' by Natural Factors.
I'm getting enough calcium in my diet but I do take 500mg magnesium/day
too. I've found that the added magnesium has greatly decreased my
menstrual cramps, although that probably won't apply to Bear. :-)

I think each of us has to decide what we need as individuals,a nd what works
best for us. You wouldn't even BELIEVE how many different vitamins and
supplements I take every day. People who know me say I'm crazy! But since
fionding a balance that works for me -- along with my low-carb regimen -- I
completely control my diabetes, cholesterol, triglycerices and GERD with no
medications at all. And my blood pressure is nromal on two lesser-dose
rather than the three higher-dose meds I had been taking.
