I haven't seen anything about this before and my Doc was of little help so I'm turning to the experts here.
A couple of months ago I developed something in my right calf that I can only describe as feeling like someone plucking a string in the back of my leg. It happens when I excessively drop my heel (powering up a climb). I can mimic the symptom by dropping my heel climbing up a flight of stairs. Again, only on the right side. If I don't correct during a ride, then my calf hurts for several days after.
The doc suggested a ligament pull, but I wanted to get other opinions.
I had a similar situation and it took me over a month to figure out what I had done. I finally realized that I was relaxing my calf and letting my heal hang down which was stretching the calf muscles and AT. After a brief rest I concentrated on keeping both calfs firm and not letting my heals hang down. In a matter of days the pain went away and hasnt been back since. Go for a ride and see if you are doing the same. If so, concentrate on keeping a 90 degree angle at your ankle. After a while, it will be trained and you wont have to concentrate on it any more. You can also measure your calfs to see if one is bigger than the other. That is a sure sign that you are relaxing one calf. Good Luck
You would know if it were pulled, you wouldn't be able to walk, which is what happened to me. Please be careful and treat the problem -- don't end up with a torn tendon, ligament or gastrocnemious, like I have.
