I have a Mark III Brompton. It was originally bought as a T3 with an SRAM hub. The original owner got hold of an SA 5-speed wheel and retro-fitted it to the bike. I bought the bike in this converted state but also inherited the spare rear wheel. Some time ago I cracked the sprocket and, probably in trying to pedal on, knackered the hub. The hub needs repairing but as I now want to get the Brompton back on the road I decided to stick the 3-speed wheel back on while I sort out a repair for the 5-speed.
Upon examining the wheel I noticed it has no toggle and chain and a few nuts would be needed. I also suspected that I would need a couple of other bits support the gear line near the hub.
So, I contacted Biketrax. I've had Brompton stuff from them before and they seem to have lots of stock and be knowledgeable---also there is no local Brompton dealer that I can get to, oh to live in Oxford or York again! I didn't give them the full story but just enquired about the parts. They advised me that a Brompton frame for an SA hub couldn't take an SRAM hub without modification (150 quids worth) and so I'd be better getting the SA repaired.
I'm now a bit confused as to whether my frame has been retro-modified or whether it will still be suitable for the SRAM (given the parts.) Anyone have any ides?
