  1. I guess I'm getting some secondary effects of losing weight.

I was riding this morning, and got a little forward in the
saddle, so I skooched back onto my sit-bones and waggled
side to side to settle myself, and it felt like the saddle
clamp had loosened and the rails were rocking on the post.

I tried to feel for the bolts, but decided I should just sit
still on it until I did my last lap and cooldown and got home.

When I got there, I stopped at the curb and reached around
to wiggle the seat with my hand, and it didn't budge.

Turns out, it's just my ass is loose.

Sure did feel like I was attached to the saddle and the saddle
    was loose, though.

    Very weird.

I'd tell you what you need to twist but it'd scare you. I will tell
you that you need to use channel-locks or vise-grips.

    AND YOUR RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are you supposed to write about if you don't know [censored] about the
mechanics of a bike. Isn't there a newsgroup for dumb people who just
want to ride the damn bike and have fun? Do you have to have an
understanding of Alpha SL aluminum frames, SUSPENSION, the kind and
the size of wheels you need, what a crankset is and where to buy
bicycles clothes? How did cycling become so technical? How did
bicycling become so complex? Or is it just the world we live in now.
Everything that was once simple is now complicated in my opinion.
Just call me another troll, trolling the NG. I enjoy riding, but I
know I will never spend time trying to understand the technical aspect
of it all. I just a wanna have fun. I have a new bike, a new seat
(saddle) and the will to ride. What the heck else do I need to know?
Thats why God invented the LBS.

Take it easy- don't stress out. There is lots of room for casual bike
riders in the world. Riders who tend to be compulsive about biking also
tend to write in here more than the casual bikers. Just ignore the posts
you're not interested in and enjoy the rest.

    Have fun!

Maggie, go over to the bicycles.tech group and read a while. When you come
back, this will SEEM like fun.

  18. Maggie said:

How did cycling become so technical?

    It's never not been technical.

Way back in the mid-1800s when the thing was invented, it
was the Internet of its time. Way too tricky and high-tech
for your average person, way too cool and obsession-worthy
    for your horse-and-buggy hackers.

Remember, it was their expertise with bicycles that gave
the Wright brothers the knowhow to create a machine that
could actually fly under its own power.

And when (the story goes) Eduardo Bianchi got tired of
climbing his big-wheeler and made the front and back wheels
the same size, I'm sure it got a lot less dorky and a lot
    more geeky.

Everything that was once simple is now complicated in my opinion.

Decrying the apparently increasing complexity and
bizarreness of human life has been a participation sport
    for thousands of years.

As has decrying the recurring sameness of the things humans
do (such as decrying the increasing complexity).

"It's new to you" is probably the best phrase to capture
why we all don't just sit on our saddles and pedal through
    the celeste morning.

But only "I missed my TT record by one lousy second"
    explains the carbon-fiber bottom bracket...

As with your car, the people who love the geeky part have
taken great pride in making sure you never need to know
anything other than where to put your hands and feet and
how to unscrew the filler cap.
