Seat question

For street riding the Miyata/torker LX saddle is the best. It is much
easier to get out in front of you. It is also a great trials seat. I
use the Miyata seat on all of my unicycles.

I saw some of the European Uni's at Unicon with one of those seats- they
look really nice. In fact, I'd much prefer them to the std KH seat,
which I think is overly stuffed. This Koxx seat is just like a KH but
about half the thickness (I don't know about base plate stiffness
though).

I don't think you get more comfort from having excess padding- it just
gets in the way and adds weight. I've actually cut my KH seat foam into
half and put a fusion cover over it, and stuck it to a Carbon seat base,
and I've finally got a seat I'm happy with. But if the Koxx seat was
available here I'd definitely get one.

How about some pictures? How do you like that seat cover. I finally
destroyed my Roach cover and need another. With the Roach no longer
available, my options are slimming down.

I ride street almost exclusively. My uni originally had a KH seat on
it, but i switched to the Miyata seat after i broke the seat base
bailing down a set of stairs. I've been completely satisfied with the
Miyata seat ever since. Of course, it's not as comfy as the KH, but
it's better for riding street since it's more manoeuvrable and i don't
spend long periods of time on the seat anyway. (My 26" cruiser has a KH
on it though.)

Here's the rule of thumb:
If you are going distance riding (MUni, cruising, commuting) and will
have your butt on the seat for long periods of time (30+ minutes
straight), then go for the KH seat. You sacrifice manoeuvrability, but
it's worth it, and how much seat-out riding are you going to do on long
treks anyway.
If you are going technical riding (street, trials, freestyle) and will
want to be handling the seat a lot, then go for the Miyata seat. You
butt probably won't be on the seat long enough to feel much discomfort,
regardless of the seat, so you might as well get one that you can pull
out and handle easily.

That Koxx seat sounds and looks really good though. Maybe that's the
optimal seat, being both comfortable and manoeuvrable. Please post info
on it, if anyone has any experience with it. Any North American
distributors?

About half way down the page. I'll get around to putting more pics up
of my Coker setup in the next few weeks.

I like my cut down seat much more than the KH seat- with half the bulk-
and feels just as comfy. In fact, when you are pedalling very fast I
think there's less pressure/chaffage/useless foam getting in your way.

The Fusion seatcover is holding up pretty well so far- I've put in about
3-400km on two of them. It has Kevlar around the front and the back,
and looks pretty hard wearing. I'd actually ordered a new KH/Roach
seatcover for my Carbon KH, but never got around to putting it on- and
swapped it for a Fusion cover instead. I like the Fusion cover better-
it's a nicer shape, but I am using a foam seat, not an airseat.

Out of interest, do you not use airseats at all? I've always avoided
them as part of an attempt to minimize the number of things that can
(and will) go wrong when you're 15 miles away from the nearest road.

Hi Joe,

I used to use a Carbon Fibre Miyata Airseat- set up with a Roach Cover,
Wilder bracket. I quite liked it at the time but found it required a
lot of unnecessary fiddling about- especially when taking the seat
apart/cleaning it etc. I agree that it is comfy, but it never gave the
solid reassuring feeling I get with a foam seat.

Then the KH seat came along and I haven't used an airseat since. I
missed the no flex quality of my Carbon airseat though, so I upgraded to
a KH Carbon seatbase early this year, with a direct KH seatfoam/Cover
transplant. That worked pretty well, although with the original
seatcover it looked pretty tattered by the time it was transplanted onto
the Carbon base. That changed with the Fusion Cover, and gave me the
opportunity to cut the foam down into half thickness. I think I've
finally found my perfect seat. I've put in hundreds of Kms both on road
and off road- it's really comfy without being overkill interms of
padding.

At the moment I have two KH Carbon seats with Fusion Covers and Cut-down
foam. One has a Std KH handle- which I use for MUNi, whilst the other
has a GB handle with an extra stubby bar end on the end of it for
distance Cokering. I also have a Reeder handle which I may put on the
old Carbon Miyata seat- and possibly replace the airseat with foam.

Clear as mud? :p I think we think alike in terms of seats anyway.
