  1. Been cycling 40 years. Sometime 100 mls per week. Once 1000 mls over three
weeks. Currently one 24 mile trip per week. I have ALWAYS had my cycling
spoilt by a sore backside, which kicks in during the second mile.

    Got a Brookes saddle.

    Any solution?

    1. Change your saddle.
    2. Cycle less.

You've cycled for 40 years with a sore backside? I do believe alt.support.S&M
    is over there----->

On a more serious note - change your saddle! Find one that is comfortable. Are
you wearing padded cycling shorts? If not - wear a pair when cycling - keep
    clean.

    Try a recumbent :-)

Are you using proper padded bike shorts with no undies?

Hardly shorts weather, threes snow on the way!

  6. I've never owned any 'designer' cycle wear just my 'normal# wear, but if
    thats what it takes.

I cycle to college. I would therefore have to wear cycling short with my
normal 'longs' over them, - sopunds a bit hot in a centrally heated
    environemnet.

    1. Which type of saddle would be better?

    2. I hardy cycle that much (24 mls per week)

  8. Try a recumbent, perhaps like this:-

I think it does. I have a bike with a Brooks saddle, and since
getting proper bike shorts of good quality with moulded synthetic
chamois inserts (and ditching the undies, as noted) I had very few
problems even on long rides. For very long rides some people
recommend chamois cream, which I haven't tried. These days I ridea
'bent so have no comfort problems at all.

Shorts, tights or bibtights over the top, and change when you get
there. I take a pair of trousers in on a Monday and bring them back
    for washing on a Friday.

Doesn't have to be designer stuff ;-) Just a normal pair of padded cycle shorts
(Lycra ones are very good for being worn under longs of various types.

Take a change of pants. Go commando in the padded cyce shorts. Have cycle
shorts under your more normal outerwear or a pair of something such as RonHill
Bikesters (Look like black tracksuit bottoms, but have a higher back than
normal, so when on bike, you don't get a cold spot...)

My son cycles to college nearly every day - he has a round trip of 26 miles. He
wears cycle stuff & changes when he gets to college.

Those things look SO uncomfortable (and so low I imagine no driver would see
them). Think I'll stick with my 27" frame I had made in 1975 (Condor, Grays
    Inn Road, London)

You could always go on the other days just to get the miles in :-)

Uncomfortable?? What's uncomfortable about reclining in a soft chair with
your feet up? How many chairs in your house resemble a B17? (Brookes
    not Boeing.)

Oh they do see them. Visibility is more a matter of "What's that?" than
height. On an upright a cager will see you, recognise, and dismiss in
milliseconds. On a recumbent they have to take a longer look, almost to
the point of driving into opposing motor traffic (which they've
already seen, recognised and dismissed...) When recumbents become the
most common bi/tri/kes visibility would become a problem, but the
cagers will be busy watching out for arial porcines too.

Doesn't have to be very expensive at all - there are a lot of people who
wear the Aldi shorts. Perfectly acceptable for normal use. Although for
five miles or so I rarely bother but then I don't get a sore [censored].

There're two sit-bones in your [censored] that are meant to take your weight. If
a saddle doesn't fit then the weight is taken by somehting else, which
hurts after a while. Get a saddle that fits your sit bones and the problem
    will be solved. Hopefully.

    Good luck.
