  1. Is it possible to upgrade these silly stem mounted shimano shifters to
    something a little bit more modern? They are on this old, but nice murray.

    A Murray with stem shifters may be old, but it's never nice. ;->

    Unless someone put a "stem shifter" on a Serotta-built Murray, which
    would then beg the question who would do that?....

  6. You can install clamp-on downtube shifters. Unless there is a little
    braized-on stop for them on the downtube, they will have to be quite
    tight to keep them from slipping (actually, being pulled) down the tube.
