To separate ignorance from opinion, the following is from ignorance:

So Phonak is too big to worry about a bicycling team going nowhere.
What's the process here? My assumption is that Phonak pays only to the
team and the team pays the guarantees to the UCI and posts any bonds.
So Phonak pulls out a morals clause or something and says, thanks, but
no and splits. No major money and no races, the team dissolves and the
guarantee money is paid out to the riders and creditors. And bootleg
Phonak bikes show up on eBay for the next six months...

If the above is remotely correct, then why Phonak would stay around
more than the next 10 or 15 days, or maybe the next 10 or 15 minutes
escapes me. If all Phonak has on the line is a few hundred thousand
Euros, they must be reaching for the plug right now.

have nothing to do with Pro Tour status.

The ASO doesn't want anything to do with the Pro Tour.

All that talk about Phonak not having a team if they don't get a Pro
Tour selection is just nonsense because they are obligated to pay the
riders salaries at this point regardless of whether or not they have a
team. So why would Phonak pay $1.7 million in rider salaries and then
not even race?

get a Pro Tour license? The team owners know that. They are just
trying to threaten the UCI with pulling out of the sport.

bankrupt. So he enforced it. In Phonak, this is not the situation - they
are saying they will pull out of the sport on their own initiative.

That doesn't relieve them of their contractual obligations to pay their
riders.

contract is with the marketing company, not the riders. It's very
likely that Phonak's contract is specifically tied to the team's
ability to get entry into the big races, whether GT's or the ProTour
races.

Without that guaranteed entry by the team, Phonak takes their
checkbook and walks and the riders are left to deal with the Swiss
equivelant of Horseteef.

Phonak AG (the sponsor) founder/CEO: Andy Rihs
Phonak Cycling (the sports marketing outfit): ARcycling AG

I'm sure they've set 'em up as separate entities w/ contracts and all,
but it's not quite the strictly bizness relationship. Rihs is a
Friend of Cycling who founded the team as a publicity vehicle, and he
hired Tyler because he wants to expand Phonak into the US market (it's
#3 worldwide, allegedly). Of course, Rihs would fold the team in a
Zurich minute if he thought it was hurting the company.
