Generally directly from the manufacturer. I contacted Bell & Giro, both of
whom sent new pads for my helmets.

Far better than the slow method of calling to beg for what
the the manufacturer ought to be selling next to the helmet
display, Mike Krueger recently suggested:

"Visit your local plumbing/AC supply house and get some
closed-cell neoprene foam tape. It has a peel-off self-stick
backing and can easily be trimmed to any size or shape. It
comes in 1/8" x 2" x 30' rolls for about $8/roll. One roll
will last a lifetime. It's perfect for helmets. It is just
the right density for cushioning and support, and doesn't
absorb sweat or rain, so it won't get saturated and drip
back into your eyes."

Good idea, Carl. Those mini-sweat reservoirs against my forehead have always
been one of my pet peeves. For awhile I even had a couple of styrofoam packing
peanuts glued on there. A little too non-porous, though. The tape is easily
worth the 8 bucks. I'm sure it will have other uses.

A quick search of Home Depot's site for foam tape shows
smaller 10 or 15 foot rolls of similar tape for around $4.

A similar request at my LBS produced a box full of assorted pads, my pick,
offer of payment refused.

They were none of them exactly right but a scissors made one of them right
enough.

YMMV, but I'd try that first.

I have gotten freebies from my LBS a few times. They don't always look
just like the ones that came with the helmet, but they work just fine.

Not all local bicycle shops are run along such practical
lines as Yellow Jersey.

When I first felt a longing for some replacement helmet foam
pads, I wisely called three shops before I gave up, saving
myself several fruitless trips.

The problem was not price, but rather a baffled lack of
comprehension--apparently, no customer had ever asked them
for such rare and unusual items.

It isn't just bike shops. Some computer stores operate on
the same principles with respect to detachable power cords,
either selling them for handsome sums or else mournfully
informing customers that they have none to spare.

Dear Larry,

You could try www.giro.com, find customer service number,
and email them, hoping that they would take pity on you, but
that would be the easy thing to do.

If no local bike shops has any spare pads, and a roll of
foam tape from Home Depot is unacceptable, you could call
Bell Sports customer service at 800-456-2355 and dissemble.
Bell mails the pads for free to anyone with a hard-luck
story, and their pads will probably work in a Giro helmet.

I was looking at stick-on felt pads at home depot the
other day to put behind some new shelving units to keep
them from marring the walls.

It occurs to me now that they'd make pretty handy
replacement helmet pads.

The pads in my Specialized M2 are held in with velcro
with the loop part permanently stuck into the helmet,
so I suppose I could just use thick felt without the
stick-on side.

Frankly, the stock pads are so skinny I could probably
replace them with a thick piece of yarn.

I have the original Bell helmet (1975) and find that regular Maxipads
on the forehead position outperform anything you'll find.

They spend millions researching these things so they work, unlike
the dippy sponge things helmet makers supply.

You have to change them about once every couple of weeks. They
dry out overnight, unless it's a really humid time of year.

House brand, unscented, different brand from any females in the house
so you don't get accused of stealing.
