It's a fairly meaningless term that some people use to slam whatever
food they think everyone should totally avoid because of what it
contains and or how it's made.

The way I understand it, there are two very different camps and ways of
thinking about low-carb dieting. Some, and I'm one of these, think that
low-carb dieting involves eathing only those food that were originally
prescribed by Dr. Atkins, et al. Since the low-carb lifestyle became
popular, food manufacturers have found ways to offer almost anything as a
low-carb alternative. So you can get low-carb ice-cream, pizza, lasagna,
    and so forth.

Some will eat those foods and have success, others won't. Many of us won't
even try them. Those of us who live on fresh veggies and meats refer to the
low-carb substitutes as "frankenfoods". I will not personally say that
anything is wrong with them, it's just not something I want in my fridge.

  8. Actually it is pretty much all pre-manufactured, pre-packaged foods. Look at
the ingredients on a bag of doritos or package of hamburger helper.
It reads like a bad college chemsitry lab experiment gone awry!

  10. I thought frankenfoods were things that had been re-manufactured from their
original formula to be made into a substitute for the "real" food so as be
to allowed on a particular eating plan, whether it be low-fat, low-carb,
    etc.
Examples are chocolate bars or ice cream using sugar alcohols instead of
sugar; "potato" chips using soy instead of potatoes; bread using soy
    instead of grains; etc.

Atkins didn't really prescribe foods. He just used what was available
at the time, which included products like artificial sweetners, which
are about as unnatural as you can get. I find it hard to rationalize
that simply because a new food product comes out that didn't exist
prior to Atkins death, that makes it something to be avoided and
called a frankenfood. A good example is Hood LC milk. Bascily, they
took out the sugars and added in Splenda. I think it very likely
Atkins would have not only used such a product, but welcomed it.

And if you want to take the view that only foods specifically ok'd by
Atkins are to be used, then what about products like the Atkins shakes
and LC bars? They were around for a long time prior to Atkins death,
he clearly endorsed those. Yet people here routinely refer to those
as frankenfoods too and I doubt you use them.

Being a 48 year old man and after 100 pounds lost (and about 30 more
to go) on a low carb lifestyle, The only "packaged as low-carb" foods
I ever eat is the chocolate ice-cream. And even with that, I see my
    keto levels change.

I have been working at this for almost 2 years now. I am as healthier
than I have ever been in my life, and my sex life is better than ever
(ok you all probably did not need to read that)

Low carb was my salvation. But as a life style, not a diet. that's
the only way (IMHO) that it will work.

You may as well have gone and asked for a definition of vegetarian.

  14. Actually the original 'Frankin Foods' are genetically altered to give them
more of something: Flavor, resistant to strains of molds, rot, bugs, more
    fruit, better climate stability etc.

  15. But is that the definition that people have been using on this NG?

No, but curiously enough, almost all of the Frankenfoods discussed here are
    so engineered.

  17. I think everyone who uses it has their own definition.

I don't think it's true that almost all of what people here refer to
as Frankenfoods are geneticaly engineered. For example, I see people
bash things like the Atkins bars and candy, LC ice cream, shakes,
bread, etc, by calling them Frankenfoods. There's no reason to
believe any of these contain genetically altered components, certainly
no more so than any other off the shelf food product. They do have
various amounts of food additives, like many other commercial
    products, whether LC or not.
