  1. Feeling bored, I've tried to scan my xrays from last year. It doesn't
    really work.

I've just been looking at the newspaper cuttings (somewhere on the
same pages) and hadn't realised that the strategically misplaced
bottle of wine in the background makes me look like an alcohlic.

    Another inspired tyop, IMHO.

And judging from the photo you evidently sip it all day from a mug! :-D

Leave the scanner lid open and shine a uniform light from above (e.g.
nice bright bike light diffused through tracing paper).

Still won't be very good tho'

Having seen the way this thread's developed, I've just been checking
everything's still there that should be there. I was a long time
    unconscious, you know.

    Don't do that, do this..
Take a piece of aluminium foil and place it over the film, shiny side down.

This will improve it a lot.

I got pictures by standing the film in a window and photographing it with a
    digital camera.
    Still not good, though.

The quality you will get from these depends on the type of scanner you
have and the interface. If you have a scanner where you can set the D
max and D min values before scanning, often located in the professional
or similar mode, set these to 95% Dmax and 5% Dmin, set the exposure to
an appropriate density, this should not alter the Dmax or Dmin setting.
Presto (or should I say Presta) the scanner will make a far better job
    of the scan.
Trouble with X ray scans is the film is a lot denser than ordinary film.
If you can only scan in RGB you will likely find a button which says
something like Set White Point / Set Dark Point. Leave a little Neg
rebate area to set the dark point 95% or numeric 6-8 and use the
brightest point for the white set this back from 255 to 246 or 5%.
Setting white and dark points in this way will cancel any colour cast
    you get. Don't use neutralise.
Make sure Unsharp mask or auto dust and scratches is off.

Does it matter? Does going in the wrong order (Spectacles, wallet,
testicles, watch?) summon unholy forces from the dark side?
