  1. I get the impression that a lot of bike stuff is much cheaper if bought from
Germany -- particularly lights, dynamos etc.
Anyone confrim this -- and if so point me to a recommended web site that
    will ship to UK

A LOT of stuff is cheaper in Germany which just shows we are all still
    being ripped off.

PLUS the level of customer service is outstanding (something we are
not used to in the UK)

    Good Luck

Some things are - I got B&M dymnotec S6 plus front & rear lights
delivered from germany for quite a few less euros than I could find it
in pounds in the UK. I don't actually remember teh cost difference,
but it would have been something between half and two-thirds the price
of buying in teh UK, I think.

I used www.bicycles.de, who used to have english web pages, but they
seem to have disappeared, so you might need to brush up on your
german. They also sent me a catalogue of such useful things as
healing crystals, beansprout growing kits and what might be termed
marital aids, but no bicycle bits.

    regards, Ian SMith

Surely something's either a marital aid, or not?

    What a hoot!
I only got 8 out of 14 right, and never thought I led a sheltered life
    before.

Lights maybe, quality high end road components no. I work in Germany a
few days most weeks and would certainly buy stuff there if it was
cheaper. I have a roadie friend there and I must have bought 90% of his
bike for him from the UK. He searches Wiggle/Parkers/Ribble/Settle,
tells me what he wants and I take it over the following week!

About the only thing I bring back are SKS Co2 canisters!

Crumbs. I'm never going to look at a pet shop in the same light again.

You get more than that by calling them all doggy toys. I wonder how
many persons of a canine persuasion were consulted before classifying
    some of them differently?

So, is a Hello Kitty "shoulder massager" a marital aid or not?

Depends if the shoulder an erogenous zone or not.

9 out of 14. I'm kind of intrigued by the yellow thing about halfway
    down.

10 out of 14 on the difficult test. One or two came as a surprise!

No its not. I have visited about ten bike shops in Frankfurt area and
I would say 2 of them gave what I would describe as good service.
Germany is famous for its surly shop staff, whom view the customer as
an inconvenience. One shop I went into at 1355 on a Sat afternoon to
buy a bike refused to let me in as he closed at 2pm.

The effort made by most staff to solve customer problems was
especially bad. Although there is a mandatory 2yr guarantee in Germany
many businesses are not good at after-sales service and will endeavour
to charge, even for problem fixes. The first question I was asked when
I took my bike in for repair was when I had bought it so he could
judge his reponse based on whether it was under guarantee.

The prices are slightly cheaper, up to 20% for lights and accessories.
Clothing and shoes are also slightly cheaper. Specs for bikes
themselves cary so much its difficult to tell , but I generally got
the impression they were cheaper than UK.

Incidentally there are a number of boutique shops run by pro or ex-pro
cyclists which are outside of this assessment, but these are
relatively small and provide limited mail-order.

The grass is always greener, but the reality of commerce especially
retailing in Germany is still IMHO way behind that of the UK.

    Dave
