Today managed to get my maximum speed up to 31.4 mph not much in the big scheme of things but on a "Y" frame with knobblies, down a wide sweeping smooth(ish) section of road ( "Lanark road" from Gillespie cross roads past Kingsknowe for those that know the Edinburgh area), was plenty fast for me, was exhilerated rather than scared. What a difference to a couple of months ago when going down a different hill was a good 10 mph slower but I was terrified ( mind you the wind was blustery) .

Blustery descents scare me. Wet and windy ones terrify me. I rode the Wild Wales in August and descended some hills not much faster than I'd climbed them, even then I nearly missed a few corners. But give me a dry calm day ..... wheeeee!

Slow. ;-) I can get up to 36 on my Marin with knobblies and 45 on my Windcheetah on thart section. I'll bet it helped that the wind was behind you. -- Mark

I commute that way and the wind at that point is mostly behind going down hill, sometimes against and very very rarely is it from the side.
It's that hill that makes the journey to work worthwhile. -- Mark
