I have been looking at cycling shoes on ebay, and could do with some advice. I have normal pedals with clips and straps. Will any of the shoes work, i.e clipless, SPD etc, or do I need to make sure that they AREN'T something or other? Sorry if this sounds daft, but I haven't a clue here.

Nearly all cycling shoes are designed for clipless pedals but some of these also happen to be ok with clips & straps, eg. Shimano MO21 (SPD).
Some shoes might have uppers that are a bit fragile to take the wear and tear from toe clips. Some hardcore mountain biking shoes have deeply treaded/knobbly soles that might not slide onto your pedals well, but most soles should be ok, but be warned that serious "road" (and some MTB) carbon soles and the like are totally rigid so you can't walk properly in them. This will be the case if the shoes are Look-compatible.
It's hard to know which ones will be ok (and will fit) so you're better off buying from a bike shop.
Of course you could switch to clipless pedals now. They're great and the pedals usually cost less than the shoes.

Hmmm if you're buying shoes I'd spend another £20 or whatever and get pedals as well - you'll love them!
If you like being able to occasionally use normal shoes you can get clipless pedals that have a normal flat surface on the other side. Bit of a faff getting them the right way up, but you have that with your current pedals anyway.
With the shoes, I found that I needed a size 12 instead of the normal size 11 (same with all my football boots too), so ebay may be a bit risky. I'd definately recommend going into a shop so you can try before you buy.

If you have normal pedals with toes clips then you probably don't want shoes designed for any flavour of clipless pedals (SPD included).
(Of course the right thing to do is buy some SPD pedals as well as some suitable shoes 🙂 )

Before I went clipless, I used to wear those lightweight Puma trainers with the fold over velcro strap. The have pimples on the soles and are reasonable stiff. They were great and stuck to the pedals like glue. Just a suggestion. Not ideal for winter though. I use Specialized Mountain Pro with ratchet strap like snowboard boots- They have a neoprene "sock" and thin deep treads surrounding the sole and cleat recess. I'm not sure what the key features are for cycling shoes that aren't embodying cleats though ... DAve

Michele, I hope you've had an opportunity to try on the shoes of your choice before you buy.

I found toeclips with proper cycling shoes good, cept I got shoes with fairly deep treads on the bottom (I didn't want to go [censored] over on a supermarket floor). I then found the tread would 'helpfully' engage with the triangular shaped cleaty thing on my toeclip pedals.
In the absence of enough confidence to put on the SPD pedals I have, I opted for flat metal cage pedals (serrated outer is great for grip with the treads, unless it's raining, but also great for taking chunks out my shins/calves with) but added plastic toecups on.
Lovely. I get lots more use out of each pedal revolution, and find it a a lot harder work if I don't have the feet in them (sometimes conditions dictate it's wiser to ride on the underside of the pedal for a bit).
