I'm seven days into the Atkins diet.
Why is water specified as the required drink instead of diet soda. Diet soda
has no carbohydrates and does hydrate me.
Thanx

I would guess several things could be involved.
1) artificial sweetener may be one of the 'unfavored" types such as
aspartame.....
2) breaking of habit of frequent indulgence of sugar/sweets is probably
a good idea for a new Way Of Eating WOE.
3) anything other than the above.
There is an old concept that carbonated water doesn't do the kidney
flushing of breakdown products as well as plain water.... and you will
certainly hear somebody say that to you sometime or other.

I think the side effects are minimal, I need diet soda on Atkins.
I use it when I feel hungry especially in the afternoon.

Aspartame really stalls me ... but mostly because I'm a serious caffeine
addict. Now that I drink only water, I've been able to loose weight easily.
I think if you have it in moderation, it is fine. My problem was that I
would drink way too much diet soda. Through evolution our bodies have
become great and "predicting" how much sugar is coming into the body by how
sweet something is. When aspartame comes in, my body would think that sugar
is coming in and would consume any blood sugar I had. Then when no sugar
arrived, I would get very hungry and would overeat.
I could feel my blood sugar was low, but never knew why.

but, it wouldn't be carbonated by the time it got through the stomach....

It doesn't follow that the carbonation had to still be in the water when
the water hits the kidneys ......
The observation is common that people who drink carbonated water go to
pee fairly soon after.
Of course, they may have been going to pee anyway, or perhaps the
carbonated water influenced the rapidity of the next urination.
It also doesn't follow that ALL carbonated drinks cause quick urination
either.
It is just something that is commonly said... carbonated water drinks
are often claimed to not be part of the kidney flushing 8 glasses of 8
oz. of water that heaven only knows is somehow claimed to be needed.
People like to say stuff like that.
Makes them sound like they know something, even when their head is ....
well a good candidate for a blimp and thankfully anchored by a neck.

Ditto for citric acid. Or, has that theory changed in recent book
updates?

That may make sense to you, but I highly doubt it has any basis in
reality. Most things that people think "stall" them are probably
unrelated. Like the chikens doing their wierd rituals when feeding
time came.
