Grear position indicator for road bike

There are two options:

1) Shimano Flightdeck or Campag Ergobrain computers, for their
respective integrated brake/shift levers.

2) Little add-on mechanical devices which go on the cable. These would
work in friction mode (e.g. with bar-cons) provided the rear cog spacing
was standard.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what you're asking for? I
know it's nice to have the gear indicator device for STI levers (the
clear plastic section with the little red piece that moves with the
cable), but if you're using downtube shifters (which I assume you are
since you mention 'index and/or friction'😉 why not just look down at
the shifter? It takes all of about 5 tries to get used to the
relative position of the lever and the correlating gear selection.

I guess you're looking for something to solve a bigger problem, 'cause
what you've asked for seems like a solution for a problem that doesn't
exist.

The Shimano Flight Deck's flagship feature is its gear indicator. It's actually
wired to the shifters. Cadence is calculated from gear position, the opposite
of how you describe. But I suppose it could be done that way too.

Your eyes?

I usually take a glance down at my rear derailer, cogs, and chain. It is a very
accurate method/indicator. It avoids the calculation step.

I can also usually tell by simply feeling my bar-end shifter too.

I have a 6-speed rear, and sometimes have to look twice.

With 9 or 10, it would be exponentially harder.

However, if you do all the calculations beforehand, and
make a table, or just ingrain it in your nut, you'll be
able to tell more quickly from cadence and speed.

with this shifter ?

Thanks. I am interested in the shift indicator. I looked around at The

but couldn't find it. Is it something I can find at LBS ?

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I have both, a bike with down tube shifter and
another with STI.
You are right that it is less problem with down tube shifter, but it is
still nice if I could easily tell
whether I am already at the largest cog at a steep hill.

I am near sighted and it is almost impossible for me to tell by looking at
rear cog.

ERGO brain and Frightdeck will tell you this. shimano has their little gear
indicator for STI, but ya gotta use their crummy 4mm housing. Nothing other
than sneakin a peek betwix yer legs for friction...which is the best, IMO.

Should work fine altho the plastic thing generally tells you it has moved, not

My MTB (I have one MTB and five road bikes) has indicators on the
shifters showing the gear position. Funny thing, I still find myself
invariably looking down between my legs to determine what gear I'm in.

Check with your LBS, they often have these laying around. For some
reason, they don't always install them. I put one on my bike when I
upgraded to DA levers, and I like having it.
