Thanking you

They are only as effective as the person using it..
The old "you only get out what you put in" clause.
What specifically do you plan to do with it?
I have a rim trainer btw, so if mine was eating
tyres... I might need to check my user manual! ;-)

Hippy,
I intend to use the trainer to compliment my bike riding when it is cold and wet. ie for training purposes on days like today.
Also by "eat tyres" I meant trainers cause the tyres to wear out faster.

They work fine for that purpose. I use them but only
when I 'have' to. Indoor training sucks - I'd usually
prefer to get wet outdoors.

I know. I was suggesting that with a rim trainer, where
the contact is with the rim not the tyre, you will not have
the tyre-wear problem..
Check out the google groups link I posted. MANY
people have asked about trainers before..

I recently bought a Minoura hyperrim alloy rim drive. Done a few "rides" and
I am very happy with it.
Doesn't touch the tires.
