Just received new set and one the round plastic pieces that clipped over
the axle spoke ends was broken. Went to the Mavic website to see if they
were part of the wheel or just packing and they show on the detail section
but I just can't see the necessity for them. Opinions on leaving them off
would be appreciated.

If you are speaking of the plastic pieces that protect the hollow axle ends of the front and rear hubs during shipping, you are OK in removing them.
However, it is not clear to me what you are describing... could you link or attach picture(s)? -

I'm referring to the 4" or so circular pieces over the spoke ends at the FTS
hub. Thanks for any input. -

(Hope you have better luck with the #%^^%#-in' HUBS than I did!)

Thanks for everyone's help. Mavic confirmed they are unneeded.
