Tough to say without knowing your inseam, but I would guess 17.5". I'm 5'8" or so and I ride a 53cm
road bike, which is about the same design as a hybrid. That's about a 21". So, I'm guessing 17.5". A
good bike shop should be able to confirm that for you if you go in and try a few out. I would
definitely spend the time to find a good shop and let them size the bike for you. The size is very
important to the overall riding experience and it's worth doing it right. Don't settle for something
that is not correct for you.

Can you stand over a 22"?? I (5'10"😉 can't! Generally I would start fitting a 5'3" person with a 16
or a 15 and go from there. 17 maybe depending on the rider and the brand. Look at the distance from
the seat to the handlebar critically. Bikes get longer as they get taller.

If I lined up a random bunch of humans by height, you'd be with the small group in the crowd. Start
with a medium-small or a small. ( not an extra small - you would not be at the end ).

Take Andrew's comment about the length of the top tube seriously. Women tend to be shorter in the
torso than men do so the standard method of having the customer "stand over" the bike is worse for
women than for men. Sheldon Brown (start at www.sheldonbrown.com) has (or at least had) an article
about bike fit, I recomend it. I could stand over the 22.5 frame, but the top tube would likley be
too long and I'm 6"1'. My wife stands 5"1' and that 17.5 would be too large for her. Hope that helps
to put things in perspective.

Thanks for all your replies. I am riding a 21" bianchi racing bike from the 80s, and I find it a bit
short in terms of the top frame. I guess measurement and design nowadays have changed a lot. I'd
better go to a local shop to see if 17.5" would be too big for me.

Sport frames such as your Bianchi Limited or whatever were built from 19" to 25". Modern road bike
sizing is from 48 to 63 cm. Mountain bikes' range is 13 to 21 inches and "hybrids" are usually 15 to
23 inches. Much of this is semantic which is why one good answer is "medium small or small".

You can't beat a personal fit and test ride for a better answer!

My 13-year old (female) child, 5' 4", rides a 15" MTB, a 49 cm. touring bike, and a 50 cm.
Cannondale road bike. Her legs are a little short in proportion to her torso.
