But with such a challenging capitulation as that of Body and Soul, or Mind and
Matter, a misunderstanding is to be anticipated, and its action must now be
forestalled. It has not been courted by me, but I have allowed the issue which
might be responsible for it to remain dormant, in the margin, possibly dogging
my progress, in order to deal with it at the conclusion of this phase of my
argument.
The effect of what I have said so far might be to throw the reader into one
camp or the other--and he might certainly have got the idea that only two,
clearly defined, generally recognized, positions were involved: and he might in
the end find himself in what, even from his own standpoint, was the wrong camp.
But Body and Mind, I need not remind the reader of such a book as this, are,
philosophically, two very shadowy counters. There are, on the market today,
patterns of belief extending from the extreme position, on the one hand, that
there is in fact no traceable psyche, but only one stuff, out of which our
world is composed, properly neither "matter" nor "mind"; to the extreme
position on the other, which, as a matter of fact, is much the same as the
former, only with a more strongly marked subjective flavouring. The single
basic stuff is more soulful at that end that it is at the other, the
deterministic end, that is all."

Oh, I suppose I should mention running ...

Ran one of my favorites today. Great fall colors. Quite a few slippery
patches, especially the bridges, what with all the leaves and rain of late.
Managed not to get my feet soaked despite the swollen breadth of the upper
Sawmill Valley feeder streams I bounded over, not without a slight sense of
intrepidness. Tracked down the Glen Erin trail and in to Erindale Park. Over
the bridge I followed the path down and under, passing a gaggle of fishermen
in their Maoist fall jackets, buttoned to the neck. Heading upstream I
followed the Credit river on the fashionable east side. Police on mountain
bikes speed past, inexplicably wearing bicycle shorts at this time of year .
The trail turned soggy just south of Burnhamthorpe as I picked my way
cautiously through piles of overburden recently washed over from the
adjoining marsh. Seagulls bandied squawks about as each fought to steal what
little bit of rotting salmon they could from one another. Up the embankment
I went with modest determination until the foot of the bridge abutment. New
and recent *improvements* to the public access turned decades old
up-until-now functional railroad tie stairs, in to a snarl of orange mesh,
formwork and mud. Banging my soles against the guardrail, now some seventy
feet above the river, I embarked on my final leg. Once off the main
thoroughfare I found myself in forest again, alone save for some pot smoking
teenagers, two pretending to be doing nothing other than hiding behind a
tree with no leaves, and one sporting a "yeah, like so what" air amid the
obvious fog. Couldn't help but grin as I speed past. Good stuff I smelt to
myself, but probably still hydro. Hard to tell this far out of practice.
