Are 9spd sram/gripshift 2:1(shimano) units compatible w/ shimano 8spd
cassettes in any way? dead clik? cable mounting? or is the shifting/spacing
completely different?

No. I believe the 7's and 8's can be interchanged, but nines use a
different cog spacing/"click" spacing entirely. As do the tens.- -
