  1. Just a "howdy ya'll" from a 45 year old mountain biker in Georgia. I have been looking fo a decent forum to share experiences and information. This looks like the best I have found so far. I have been riding for about 4 years about half the time on dirt and half on street( I may need to buy a street bike one day), usually only about 10 miles at a pop but plan on making some longer jaunts next summer. One Idea I am toying with is a day long ride from somewhere just south of Augusta to Savannah. My goal is a hundred miles in a single day. Considering my current condition it will mean building up some endurance.
By the way, I am not interested in playing the flame game. For you flamers out there( every forum has them) trying to insult a guy who calls himself stinky is a waste of time.
Looking forward to reading some good posts!

    Welcome stinkycat!

You will certainly find tons of advice here (and yes, a good bit of flamage. Check out the soap box; since the election some sparks are flying there). I ride in a similar way to you - medium-length street stuff. For what it's worth, I found that the problem with longer distances (in my case about 60 miles) was not endurance, but saddle comfort. Dropping your speed by 2-3 mph will buy you tons of endurance but you can run into comfort issues on a long journey that just don't show up in a 10-miler. You might want to build up slowly to give your butt a chance to toughen up!

    Happy riding man (woman?)

  3. Welcome to the board. Oh how I miss North Georgia. I rode some very nice trails in Ellijay around this same time last year - Bear Creek, River/Red/Boy Scout Loops off the Cartecay River. Excuse me, while I go wipe the jealous tears from my eyes.

Good morning neighbor. I agree with my young friend from across the pond. Comfort is a big issue in the long hauls. 100 mile is a long way on a Mountain Bike.
I would consider training on a MTB and Road Bike ,as I do, but for the long hauls you can't beat a properly fitted lightweight Road Bike. Weight and body position make a lot of difference. Of course the conditioning you mentioned as well as hydration and food consumption on the trip.
Also consider practicing drafting since you can save about 30% energy letting someone else cut the path for you. It shows up in a long ride.

  5. If your old bike is "paining" you give consideration to going recumbent. They are great for long hauls. But more importantly no matter what type of bike you have, make sure it fits correctly. A good fit on any bike goes a long way toward the comfort factor.

Hi, Stinkycat You never said whether you were male or female!!
I'm 46 years old, I just started cycling this year. My regular route is about 10 miles, but the most I have done is just over 31 miles. Don't push yourself to quickly and just enjoy the freedom of the road. I also hope to do a century in a day. My husband is very encouraging and has started going out with me. I guess that helps, especially as he comes up with some interesting routes. 😎

  7. Thanks for the warm welcome! I forgot to list my gender it seems. Did Ya'll ever hear of a woman calling herself "stinky". Come to think of it , this is the internet so you may have. I am a guy.

This board is the best I have seen when it comes to bikes. I hope to have a lot of good posting/viewing here.

Welcome on board MR. Stinkycat! :p

As for the endurance, if you steadily increase your riding time and find the saddle that fits your bum, 100 miles will not be a problem!

    Happy riding! 🙂
