Real time stock market returns/news (I manage a hedge fund as my real job):

Market WAS up Nasdaq up, Dow utilities down (i.e., buy Kerry, sell Bush
stocks). Market sold off sharply from a realtime news story of Kerry winning
in Ohio, sharp reversal in S&P futures.

Traders now seem to think Kerry's going to win. I operate a market neutral
(long/short) fund, but may be going short. With so many states so tight, even
a slight upswing in voting in Kerry's favor could result in a landslide win in
the electoral college, and I don't think markets have discounted this.

It's the old, "Buy on the rumor, sell on the news." I'd say if you are in
utilities or other dividend stocks and haven't discounted for a Kerry win
than you've made a mistake. But in the long run (which would be the proper
time horizon for stock investors), I don't think who wins the election
matters much in any industry.

The strategies for large investors are more complicated.

Reversing small 5,000 or 10,000 share positions is one thing, but institutions
with positions of 500,000 shares and more cannot unwind these quickly (at a
decent price), so many have hedged part of their positions, but came into the
day exposed. Even worse, many have net losses for the year, most believed Bush
would win, and the changes in the 10-12 battleground states plus the turnout
factors came quickly. Thus you have a reversal, and likely some frightened
short-term bulls.

Nobody had wanted to do much net buying before the election, but now there will
be some rotation (drugs for technology, for instance). Some of this has
actually been going on for a few weeks. The new buying will eventually push
the market up, but not before some selling due to rotation and unwinding of
hedges.

I came into today completely neutral (long and short) and went out net short
(on the reversal).

You must be delusional. Bush is ahead by over 130,000 votes in Ohio with
100% reporting. Kerry would need almost all the provisional ballots to be
valid and all to go his way for him to win. It's not happening. The only
reason the major networks aren't calling it is because the expected the race
to be a lot closer.
