I feel vindicated. Mine's saved my life twice. Once, my fault (alone
on a downhill stretch, no cars around, decided to pull out my wallet
because I was approaching the station with a waiting train on it), and
second time, of all things, when thugs decided to lay in to me with a
steering wheel lock.

There doesn't appear to be a lot of seatpost 'in' the
frame at the facture point? In hindsight, I guess an
mtb post would've been a good investment. Good
to hear you are relatively okay. Pity about the bike.

Glad to hear you are OK. You're in Perth aren't you? Whereabouts did it happen? Was there a bump or anything you rode over? I broke a carbon seatpost on the roadie on the bikepath on the city side of the narrows bridge on the way into my job in Perth. Luckily it didn't throw me off or worse drop me onto the back wheel. Scared the living daylights out of me though.

Looking at the pic of your frame, there appears to be a web between the top tube and the seat tube. Did it break above the web? Do you think it may have cracked before for the previous owner, and the web was welded in as reinforcement? Or, in hindsight, was the seatpost just that little bit too short?

Anyway, good to hear you survived it

Wow, that's a terrible design for a bicycle frame! Very long unsupported
frame tube, probably less than 1mm thick.......

That seatpost on the pic, looks like it may have been over its safe
limit. Bad luck anyway, good to hear your are okish.

The frame broke right at the seat stays (which is the same place as
that little web ends. This coincided with the bottom of the seat
post and that is the main problem. Another poster said a BMX post
would have been a good investment and I think that's right. The problem
is that I raised the seat a little when I bought the bike.

I think I did go over a bump. I was riding up to Heathcote (S of River)
and felt the seat flex. I thought the saddle had come lose so I leaned
on the front to get it back horizontal. Wrong thing to do. It snapped
off and with the fixed gear I couldn't control the bike.

Oh well, that'll learn me.
