I've gone through 2 KMC chains in about 2 years. Chains tend to wear out faster on SS's more so than multi-gears, but 2 in 2 years seems excessive to me. Sure I ride a lot but still...

So I'm trying ACS. I've seen some posts about their free wheels and decided to give them a try. Should be here sometime this week. If it lasts a year I'll let you know. (I'm sure you'll be dying to find out ;-))

DON'T use the PC1, it's a complete pile of [censored]. I almost broke my neck when a relatively new one snapped unexpectedly on a climb, pitching me off the bike and onto my head. Shazam's 8 speed chains are stronger than that POS.

It's the humongous bmx chain, the 1G8. Like George Costanza's chinchilla hat, "I should have gotten the big one". With 1.5 tons of breaking strength, I don't forsee a trip over the bars like I had while running that cheesy PC1.

As far as I know, there are a few minor players still producing inch pitch and block chains for the "antique" market, and Shimano had 10mm drive available for the Dura Ace track groupo in the mid 70's. The pitch being 2.7mm shorter than the standard 1/2" pitch was supposed to allow for running a smaller/lighter drivetrain (since chain pitch is one of the limits on the minimum diameter of the sprocket) with less noise. 10mm drive never really seemed to catch on, and I haven't heard of any real work being done on a "new" standard for chain pitch.

The typical multi-gear chain is 3/8 x 1/8. The other stuff I've seen (blocks and 1"😉 are, as you said, niche, mostly old coaster brake or track stuff. One thing that was kinda cool was the "Red October" SS belt drive Jericho was showing in an InterBike photo a couple years ago.

The typical multi-gear chain is 3/8 x 1/8.
Who is doing a 3/8 chain? I know ACS and others have 3/16 width, but they are still 1/2" pitch.
