Argh.. two weeks in and i am getting pimples. I hate that. I have allways had perfect skin (and i have been blessed with the ability to keep it like that without any effort at all except for day cream) except for one pimple a month during my period. And now i have several. Yikes. This is horrible. I blame Atkins. *sulks* And now for my question.. how long will it last? I am aware of the fact that my body is getting rid of bad things and an answer will be less than accurate since it differs from person to person but somekind of timeframe would be nice (worst case and best case you know?) Also - what can i do to minimize it?

Wow. My zits went away when I went low carb. In fact I am always reminded why I love low carb, because every time I get off the diet for any length of time, I develop a few.
My advice to you would be to just hang in there and see what happens. It might just be that this attack was coming anyway and you have to really get the carbs out of your system before you get all the benefits of low carb.

For me, it's been almost 6 years. I'm still waiting. Lots of other people over the years have reported exactly the opposite experience. Only time will tell I guess.
I started LC in March 2004 and they got worse for me too. I started taking additional iodine a couple of months ago and they've cleared up somewhat. I did a google search and found sites saying that excess iron can cause acne too so I've also started taking an iron-free multi-vitamin/mineral supplement since I'm getting sufficient iron from my diet.

Hmm... I have no idea how long it would or should last, because I've never seen this before. My experience, along with many others, is that our skin cleared up with Atkins. Maybe it has something to do with the hormones being released from fat cells as you lose fat? A sustained Vitamin A overdose has serious harmful health effects.
When I had pimples (1970s), I could stop my outbreak with a few large doses of Vitamin A. I think it was 100,000 IU per dose. I believe this was high enough to be considered an overdose.

Isn't Accutane basically a massive dose of vit. A? I find B-5 much more effective. Plus, it's water soluble instead of fat soluble, so you're much less likely to have complications from megadosing. i think the hormones being released from fat cells are estrogens, not the types that cause acne. but i might be wrong. dear Carmen, please chip in!!!

The actual opposite here,,,,,my skin has never looked or felt so good. I think it's due to Olive oil and tons of water. I have no complaints.

During weight loss with exercise more of the circulating estrogens might be getting bound by a protein whose job is to bind the steroid type hormones (estrogens and androgens). That could theoretically lead to acne by letting the androgens be expressed disproportionately I suppose. This is nothing more than wild eyed speculation though. Of the two sex hormone types, androgens are the instigator of pimpleitis <G>. In other words, every once in a while someone gets acne on low carb instead of better skin because ($1 to Lyle McDonald) our bodies hate us. ;-) Same reason a few get worse gastric reflux rather than having it disappear, or worse dental health rather than better checkups, or worse blood lipid profiles or <fill in the blank>.

You're too much of a [censored] to have a gun, so go tape your dryer outlet hose to the exhaust of your vehicle and then tape it into a window opening. Start the vehicle and take a nap.

Hey you should use it on your skin as well! They're way cheaper than many cosmetics made with olive oil and has almost no additives, unlike the usual cream / lotion where they have at least 2 types of preservatives.

Well, I do have his first book, and he really does know his stuff. He posts regularly on misc.fitness.weights (AKA MFW) so asking for clarifications is a possibility. He is also a self-admitted [censored], and has no patience for idiots. His books are meant for people after information, not entertainment. Once again, he himself will tell you his writing is boring as hell. Besides the fact that he knows his stuff, I admire his honesty. He'll be among the first to dog himself out when he's wrong. With Lyle people tend to be polarized. Either you hate his guts and eschew everything he says or you use his information and learn to accept (and sometimes even grow to like) the person it comes from. You've been warned. <G>
