  1. While dining out with friends, the lazy susan stopped with a big bowl of
rice in front of me. I made a cross with my index fingers and held it up
toward the bowl, like I was a victim in a vampire movie and the rice was
    Dracula.

I see no temptation in the rice. In fact, it seems like I'm watching my
friends eat poison. I feel sorry for them. I can't quite tell them how I
feel. It would sound like criticism.

I've gone from being much larger than my friends to being smaller than most
of them. I think it makes them uncomfortable.

Cubit, it's rice. Some people can eat rice in moderation, some can't. Rice
makes some people put on weight, does nothing to others. Your friends were
possibly feeling uncomfortable partly because of the relationship between
you and your food, rather than just because of your current size compared to
theirs. I mean, as a low-carber I would still find it a tad weird to see
someone making a little cross with their index fingers against a bowl of
rice, not to mention the non low carbing friends of yours.

I know what you mean about watching your friends eat poison. A friend of
mine mentioned the other day that he'd had three, THREE bagels for
breakfast. I was shocked. I never ate more than one bagel at a time even
when I was eating a carb heavy diet. "Three? Three whole bagels?" I said.
"Yeah, so what?" said he. "I did say 'bagels,' not doughnuts, you know."
I said "For what they do to your blood sugar, you may as well have eaten
doughnuts." I would not normally comment on someone else's eating habits,
but this friend has been trying to lose weight and says he's been eating
lower-carb than he used to, but then he gets confused about the difference
between carbs and fat. Like he'll ask me if I can eat cheese, and I'll say
"of course" and he'll say "But isn't it full of fat?" and I'll explain to
him once again that I'm doing low-carb, not low-fat. I keep telling him to
do some research if he wants to do low-carb, but he's a slacker.

Damn. That's rude as all get-out Dave. Substitute a platter of beef
for the rice and picture a vegetarian friend doing to the platter what
you did to the rice. It'd be offensive behavior.

Maybe, just maybe, it's not your weight loss that makes them

I remember being at a pizza lunch where my my husband worked once and
seeing one of his co-workers explaining loudly to his son, "we don't eat
this kind of pizza, because it has DEAD ANIMAL on it."

For Pete's sake, everybody has their own eating preferences, that's why
it was on a lazy susan in the first place. Just take what you want to
eat and leave the rest alone. Don't try to make a statement about your
    choices.

I'd be embarrassed if my daughter did it. She's been taught not to
make fun of people's food choices. That lesson was taught way back
when she thought it was disgusting to see her uncle eat ketchup on
    Cheez Doodles and said "Eewww".
We don't view what Cubit did the same way. You see it as a joke, I

But he made a gesture at the food. He didn't direct it at any of his

Maybe you just think no one is offended by your daughter's derogatory
remarks because no one says anything. Especially if you seem to think
    she is perfectly appropriate.

I taught my kids not to make derogatory remarks about whatever is
served. Someone spent a lot of energy making that dish to offer to you.
If you don't like it or are choosing not to eat it you don't have to

No, it's not because no one says anything. It's because of how the whole
family talks to each other. We joke around and don't take such comments
seriously because we know that even though there may be a serious side to
the underlying belief, we love each other and respect each other's right to
their own opinions. We can kid about them, though.

  18. I'm LCing for BG, not weight. I'm still experimenting about rice. I love
Asian food, which is too spicy unless eaten over rice or something bland.

Last night I had 3 dolmas (Greek, rice inside grape leaves, cooked with oil
and something acid). I guess it was about 1 cup or less of rice. My BG's
    followed a curve recommended in a.s.d: 1st hour 140, 2nd hour 120. Then I
went to bed. This morning my fasting BG was 90 (well inside normal range).

Rice or something similar would give me a lot more choices. I could use up
some of the Asian entrees in my cupboard. 🙂

Someone said they used Dreamfield's pasta for Asian dishes, haven't tried
    that yet.

  19. I'm a carb Nazi. That got my HbA1c from 10 in 2001 to 5.1 recently.
Fasting BG was 236, but most recently 84.

My friends always ask for food to be very spicy, as in picante. When the
waiter was confirming it the other night, he scowled and said hot HOT?
They said yes. I enjoy the hot food, but I cheat. I have found that taking
a Tylenol or two before dinner makes the food seem less hot.

Orange Peel Beef, General's Chicken. Yum.
