For the past 3 years, ever since moving to New Hampshire, I'd wondered
why my BP was 30 mm Hg higher in Feb-Mar than in late summer. My 25
OH vitamin D was just over 20 ng/mL in March this year. The latest
research suggests 30-40 is optimal.
In addition to the elevated BP I experienced, insomnia, muscle
twitches, and other oddities--all of which have disapeared after
raising D level--convince me of the importance of vitamin D.
After 2 months of casual sun exposure, vitamin D and calcium
supplements, and increased intake of potassium (bananas, dried
apricots, veggies) my systolic BP decreased to late summer levels.
Be sure you get lots of calcium, magnesium, and potassium (3,500
mg/day). As another person mentioned, the DASH diet is a good one.
Cheers,
Mike
