  1. Hi,
    I'm thinking about starting atkins.
I don't have the book but I have looked thru it & will go back & get it.

My question for you experienced on this plan is this.......
I have a 15 yr old carbaholic son. We haven't had any pop in the house
all week, so far so good. He's drinking kool aid now w/ sugar but I think I
can move him to spenda or SF koolaid, He never notices the SF jello. I'm
wondering if you have any snack ideas to ease this for him, since he dosen't
know yet that things are about to change here.

    TIA

  2. Splenda is great.

It is good to pick up the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. You can
also get a lot of info online, if you sign up at the Atkins website. (free,
    but has product ads)

I also like Dr. Herman Taller's "Calories Don't Count" 1961 Just ignore
the title, and switch the safflower oil to any other fat that is not a
polyunsaturated vegetable oil. Used copies are cheap.

Just about any thrift store has one version or another of the Atkins book.
Got mine for 50 cents that way.

I use kool-aid and splenda for my kids and myself all the time. Started
half-and-half with splenda and sugar, then worked up to full splenda for the
kids. They tell me they can't stand full sugar kool-aid anymore.

As far as snacks go, popcorn is "lower" carb than most snacks, but not
really "low" carb. Pork rinds are zero carbs, but many people don't like
them. Sunflower seeds are pretty low-carb and if you get them in the shell
it makes it hard to overeat.

I'm sure others have more ideas.

Popcorn, if it isn't the kind with trans fats, is relatively healthy, imo.
Better than chips, anyway. It's low-calorie even if it isn't low-carb, and
I think I remember that it is low on the glycemic index.

    Some more snacks:

    String cheese or cheese cubes.
    Pepperoni slices.
Celery with natural peanut butter or cream cheese.
    Devilled eggs.
Deli meat and cheese rolled around a pickle spear (actually, two or three
of these is a frequent meal for me)
You could use the Splenda sweetened Kool-Aid to make popsicles.

Walnuts, pecans, almonds, or brazil nuts. Preferably unroasted and
unsalted. Buy preshelled to make it a convenient choice.

Roast beef, turkey/chicken breast, ham, and a variety of hard cheeses
cut up into cubes or slices -- readily visible in the fridge.

Diet Rite sodas. Carb Solutions drink mixes if you can find them (best
tasting, imo). The orange-mango is awesome.

Water. Stating the obvious, but be sure you have a chilled clean
    source on hand.

Full fat cottage cheese. Can be mixed with a little splenda and
    cinnamon for something sweet.

    Hard boiled eggs.

Beef jerky. Read labels or make your own. Some have more sugar
    content than others.

If by chance, he actually likes salads, make sure you keep the
prewashed bagged salad greens on hand. And lots of fixings -- grated
or cubed cheese, cubed meat, taco seasoned ground beef, salsa or taco
sauce, sour cream, LC dressings, etc. Same with raw vegetables -- if
he likes them, keep some cut up and a LC ranch or blue cheese dressing
    on hand.

Hot wings. Get the bags of frozen *wing drumettes*. Imo, the
simplest and best recipe is the one on every Frank's hot sauce label.
They reheat fairly well and are also good cold.

    Deviled eggs.

(Keep in mind that some of the above may not be appropriate for you
while in induction, or you'll need to watch quantities.)

  7. Beef jerky (check the label for carb count)

Pistachios...the kind you have to shell.

My college age kids love to drink my crystal light peach and raspberry iced
    tea.
I bought Arizona's new 0 carb peach tea mix recently too.
tastes sweeter than the sugared mix!
