I really do not know what sugar alcohol is and how it affects the low carb
way of eating. I looked it up on the Internet, and I'm still kind of
baffled. Will someone kindly explain this to me and perhaps others who are
not sure of this substance. Is it something which has to be avoided on the
Atkins WOE?
Thanks so much.

supposedly it does not raise blood sugar like regular sugar does. but I think
for the most part it should be avoided. it can cause gas and other digestive
problems. I bet it us used so much because it is made from corn so it is
cheaper then splenda and such.--

way of eating.
Most of them are slower to absorb than regular sweeteners such as honey,
sugar, etc. This can make a difference to some people. For example, if you
eat a sugar pastry for breakfast and it is all absorbed at once, much of it
goes into storage and an hour later you're hungry again. However if it is
absorbed more slowly you might not get hungry again till lunch. Also for people doing ketosis, a sugar dessert might knock someone out of
ketosis, where the same amount of carbs absorbed slower might not.Quoted message said:

Atkins WOE?
You could look up some ingredient lists for Atkins brand products, and see
which of the 'ol's' below they are using. However some people say the
current Atkins management is wrong to do that, and an earlier version of
Atkins didn't allow them.http://www.lowcarb.ca/tips/tips010.html

Dr. Atkins and the vendors of low-carb products are correct that not only
fiber but also glycerin and polydextrose have little or no effect on blood
glucose. The story with sugar alcohols, however, is different. One of the
most commonly used sugar alcohols, maltitol and its syrups, does have a
considerable effect on blood glucose. Two sugar alcohols, erythritol and
mannitol, have no effect, and four others have some effect.Calorie comparison

Sucralose lacks the stability, and when you take the sugar out, you need
something to help bind the product. So you'll find just sucralose in liquid
products (soda, shakes, etc) without added sugar alcohols, but will rarely find
it in solid products.

http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/products.htm discusses sugar
alcohols in some detail. After many years of low carbing, I find I do better eating real carbs and
counting them fully than I do eating sugar alcohols. A similar carb count of
bad carbs like white sugar and white flour make me less hungry than a lower
count of sugar alcohols.-- Jenny - Low Carbing for 5 years. Below goal for weight. Type 2 diabetes,

Sugar alcohols are found in pre-packaged foods. If there is any
question as to their safety, why not avoid them altogether? Natural foods
are a better choice.

they are carbohydrates too big for humans to digest or absorb
they are used to give all of the textures that can be achieved with sugar
different people have different abilities to digest and absorb these long
chain carbohydrates, they can cause gas and diarrheathis is a shortened version from an article in 500 Low Carb Recipes and
cookbook by Dana Carpenter
