What do you do about this, especially you ladies during TOM? I don't use salt much at all and am very conscious of salt consumption during TOM, yet an extra 5-7 lbs. shows up like clockwork every 23 days. Why does that happen? I don't want to take any "water pills", but would prefer a more natural diuretic. Any suggestions?

Ignore it, it doesn't have anything to do with weight loss.

Of course not, but it's damned uncomfortable : ) I just want to know why it happens.

I think it has something to do with being female. But that's about all I know about the matter 🙂

Something about the endrometrium releasing stored glycogen as it sheds. As we know, water molecules bind to the glycogen, and then you avoid the scale for a few days, LOL! LCing since 12/01/03- Me- 5'7" 265/164/140 & hubby- 6' 310/188/180 http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lcer09/my_photos
I know how much that stinks. I also gain about 5-8 lbs during my tom. I refuse to take "water pills". I just try to drink even more water and count the days until it's over.

I usually just wait it out and stay on-plan. I also crave salty foods during PMS and usually just give in since, as you noted, it doesn't seem to make that much difference anyway. The weight goes up and later goes back down. I'm starting to look forward to my period just to see the scale go back down again :-)

There may not be that much you can do about this. It is uncomfortable, but it's just part of natural hormonal fluctuations. I'd be extra careful about salt a few days before you expect onset of "bloat", not just added salt but salty foods... read labels, it's sometimes surprising where salt shows up. Sticking to plain ole meat/poultry/fish/eggs and fresh green vegetables may help too. Stay away from canned meats and soups which often have a lot of added salt. Stepping up your consumption of dark green leafy veggies helps some people. Add minced kale and parsley to your foods, have broccoli, kale, collards, things like that. These measures may or may not help, it depends on the person. Many people find drinking a little more water also acts as a mild diuretic, especially if you're exercising a lot or the weather is warm.

Well, yeah, but was it all in your [censored]??? : )
Drinking plenty of water and exercising seem to cut down on water retention for me at that TOM. I used to gain around 3 to 5 pounds now its only 1 to 2.

It happens because of the estrogen mainly. Avoiding salt won't hurt you, but won't do squat for estrogenic water retention. Sorry.
