  1. I have a love of Irish oatmeal. The total carbs per serving are 26g. The
    label lists the following:

    Dietary fiber 4g
    Soluble fiber 2g
    Insoluble fiber 2g

Does this mean I can only subtract 2g from the total carbs? Can I add fiber
to cut the net carbs more?
    Thanks

  2. Oatmeal is not low carb.

Bear, you cannot cut the carbs by adding more fiber. Fiber doesn't "cancel
out" other carbs - it's just a type of carb that isn't metabolized and
therefore doesn't contribute to the "net" total.

So, for example, if you have a food with 5g sugar, 5g starch, and 5g fiber,
it would have 15g carb, or 10g net carb. But if you added an extra 5g
fiber, it would have 20g carb, but still 10g net carb.

  5. I know JC. Right now I'm approaching things by allowing myself certain whole
grains and fruits. No refined carbs of sugar. I'll go lower over time and
eliminate more carbs after I've dealt with some other issues. Thanks for
caring enough to point it out.

  6. Both types of fiber can be subtracted.

  7. But if you have a cup of oatmeal and add a cup of fiber and then eat one cup
of that you have reduced the carbs and increased the fiber. You have half
the carbs of the original because you are only eating half of it.

    year ago!
