  1. It seems to be the solution when we have problems losing weight. Eat
less, exercise more. It's posted all throughout the group, and holds
true for most of us slow losers.
I am in fact exercising more than before. Pulmonary problems limit my
activity. This week my doc RXed a different type med to be used in my
nebulizer (breathing machine). It's a steroid solution that goes
directly to my lung. It greatly improves pulmonary function and makes it
possble for me to walk on the Treadmill longer and at higher mph.
I am posting my menus for several days, and maybe others can help me
determine where I need to cut down, which items to avoid, so I will be
    eating less.
I have been LCing for two months, lost 6 lbs first month, none this
last month. Have kept my Carbs under 20, and Calories under 1200. I'm

I do this about one day per week, but it's just not working. Please help
me decide what I should try next.
Eat less will be fine by me, I have never been a Big Eater and can
sometimes go all day with no food if need to. It is very puzzling as to
    my very slow weight loss.
Of course I didn't eat healthy, never ate meals, just lots of fruit,
candy, ice cream, chips n dips, boiled peanuts, and lots of cereal...and
    FFs.
I don't care for bread, pasta, rice, grits, and not very much cheese.
I sometimes would go for 4 or 5 days with no Meat whatsoever, hardly
any veges. I just ate what was convenient.
Do you think there's any hope for me?

  2. Drop your calories to 1000 for a few weeks and see what happens. You'll
probably end up having to drop them more than that.

  3. faye,

Just a suggestion: do you use Fitday.com to track your calories/carbs? If
not, I'd suggest it. The online version is completely free; it's sometimes
a pain to go online just to add to your food journal. But it will track
other nutrients, fat, water, etc. And you can track your
    activities/exercise as well.

If you are keeping below 20 carbs/1200 calories, you may not be eating
enough. Sometimes that can cause a stall, as the body goes into a
starvation mode. It's a delicate balance, but with some diligence you can
find that balance. You may need to start finding your 'Critical
Carbohydrate Losing Level' and raise your calories. As far as calories,
some use the rule of multiplying your current weight by 10 or 12, and that
is the calorie count they shoot for each day. For example, 144 x 12 = 1728
calories per day. If that level won't kickstart your diet, you may need to
go lower. (My caloric level is about 6 or 7 times my weight.)

Are you drinking lots of water? Also, you might want to try eating leaner
cuts of meat (again, just a thought). Can you eat fish (cod, perch,
whitefish, etc.) and poultry? I did see that you ate salmon. You might
also want to avoid soy milk, Carb Countdown milk, and the Atkins noodles for
a while to determine if that is what is holding you back. Maybe step back
to a 'natural' diet, fresh veggies, cheese, meats, etc. (think Induction
foods list), but not Induction level carbs. Think of it as your own science
experiment, finding what causes you to stall and to lose again.

In addition to your meds, are you taking any supplements?

I think you should ditch the fake food. Re-read your Atkins book
where it says these foods are not neccesary. You also have a lot of strikes
against you that another poster had pointed out. Your a smaller person, so
you don't need as many calories. Your older and your metabolism is likely
lower, therefore you need less calories. You are sedentary because of your
health problems, therefore you won't burn as many calories. You are taking
medications that are probably affecting your weight loss. I was 210lbs
before I started eating lo-carb. I'm male, youger than you(46). Taller than
you and more active than you. I also don't take any medications. Lots of
diet plans say that I can safely reduce my calories to 1200 cal without
affecting my health long term. Does that mean that you, given your
conditions, should diet the same as a 200 lb man?
You have many strikes against you. You will probably have to look more
closely at what you eat, then other people that do not have problems. This
probably means eating only natural foods and realizing that 1200 cal for
weight loss is for the average person. You are not average. This is just my
    opinion.
Eat less......., well, you know the rest.

  5. FitDay says net 7 grams for a cup of snow peas, not 20. There appear to be
different kinds of EAS shakes with various carb counts, still don't look as
good as Atkins or Keto shakes. SF Jellos is not a fake food. It has a
miniscule amount of aspartame and flavoring, is mostly water and is
    recommended by Atkins.

  6. Tom, SILK is the brand of soy. I'm reading off the carton....Total Carb
4g, Dietary Fiber 1g. I believe that comes to 3g. net Carb. Maybe you
live in different area, but down here in the Carolinas SilkSoy is very
well-known. Also do they not have EAS AdvantEdge shakes where you live?
It has only 1g Impact Carb, 100 Cal, and is part
of the "Body For Life" Plan. Don't tell me you aren't familiar.
And where are you getting your carb count? I use the Atkins Carb
Counter Book. He says there's 3.4 net carbs in 1/2 cup snow pea pods
(that's 6.8g per cup). Jeesh, maybe you guys use a different kind of
math. I am satisfied with Atkins carb counts and will defend him to the
    end. Oops he already ended.....
Who said anything about Pasta? Not me!
If you are referring to Atkins Noodles, FUI the only two ingredients in
the recipe is Egg and Butter. Do I need to be on Maintainence to have
    those?
Besides, I never said I was on Atkins, just LC.
Why do you condemn sf jello? I am a sweet-aholic and practically
lived on fruits and other sweets before LC. If sf jello can prevent my
relapse back into the pits of Fatdom...it shall be my little box of
Miracle. Sorry, it's the only sweet I have left, and ain't ready to give
    it up yet.
If I am to cut down on calories even more, it means I'll be cutting
fats, the major part of my calories are from fat.
Do you think I"ll be able to lose anymore weight if I go to lower fat?
Probably not, and I'll be hungry as hell!
I refuse to throw in the towel. I am not a quitter. I WILL make this
    work!
    Faye

"Yea tho I walk thru the valley of the shadow of Fatdom, I fear
not...'cuz I got a pic of Atkins in my pocket."
    LC since 6/1/04 150/144/110

  7. All of the figures that I came up with were taken from websites for the
calorie counts, and I have included the links so you can see where I got
them from. Not knowing if the brands you use are the same carb counts. I
don't buy any of these things, and tend to think that if a label must be
read, then that food should probably not be eaten. I don't have to worry
about deducting "net carbs" and all the other tricky label calculations. You
    mentioned that,
"I am posting my menus for several days, and maybe others can help me
determine where I need to cut down, which items to avoid, so I will be
    eating less."
Then when I spend a half hour researching and explaining my opinion on your
choices, you say, "Jeesh, maybe you guys use a different kind of math". No,
my mistake, was assuming that you wanted actual advise about your diet
choices, rather than "support". This, I believe was your 3rd thread post
asking for help. Obviously, my weight loss success was pure luck and I don't
really have a clue about food choices. It just melted off without any effort
    on my part.

fats, the major part of my calories are from fat.
Do you think I"ll be able to lose anymore weight if I go to lower fat?
Probably not, and I'll be hungry as hell!
I refuse to throw in the towel. I am not a quitter. I WILL make this
    work!

This week my doc RXed a different type med to be used in my
nebulizer (breathing machine). It's a steroid solution that goes
directly to my lung. It greatly improves pulmonary function and makes it
possble for me to walk on the Treadmill longer and at higher mph.

Keep in mind the steroids *may* make losing weight nearly impossible.
    YMMV.

I have been LCing for two months, lost 6 lbs first month, none this
last month. Have kept my Carbs under 20, and Calories under 1200. I'm
4' 11" Senior Citizen 150/144 Did I do it correct?

Faye, I am 5'0", nearly 50yo. I initially lost quite a bit by eating
only meats and boiled eggs and drinking *lots* of water for the 1st 5
weeks, before I found this group and began low-carbing.

I followed the advice of several people on this group to watch my
calories as well as carbs and for the next 2 months, in spite of
keeping calories <1000, I saw very little progress. My advice: forget
    about the calories for now.

I was getting very frustrated and even lapsed into a depression. After
reading a book about insulin resistance and noting that I had most of
    the symptoms, I began (2 weeks ago) eating 5-6 times/day, every 2-3
hours. I eat very small amounts (3-10 "bites" depending on the food
and how hungry I feel) and have nothing but water for at least the
next two hours. If I drink a diet soda, I make sure to eat a few nuts
or a piece of cheese along with it, in case my body pumps out insulin
due to the sweet taste (so the insulin will have something to work
on). I've seen a steady decline in my weight since the day I started
this for a loss of 7 lbs in two weeks (and the depression has lifted,
    too!)

Since I'm eating so little, I no longer worry about calories, or even
carbs for that matter (I'm sure I'm still under 20 most days - I've
tried upping carbs and stopped losing, like you). I simply assure that
what I'm eating includes protein/fats and fiber. I don't use a lot of
variety in foods, except for dinner when I try to have a different
    meat and vegetable each day.

I used to eat a 6-12 oz steak and a salad for dinner (for example),
but now I can barely manage 2-3 oz of any meat and maybe 1/2 cup of
vegetables (or 1 cup of salad greens) most days. On days that I'm
hungrier, I simply eat a bite or two more for each mini-meal.

Just thought I'd share in case this is something that might work for
you or others having difficulties. We "short [censored]" (as I'm often
called) must often apply more drastic measures to achieve success.
What works for others (taller folks and especially males) simply will
not work for us short women, IME.

  9. Maybe you just need to be patient, weight loss can be a slow process. As
for the net Carb thing, I have come to the conclusion that sugar alcohols
should be counted according to what analysis has indicated they digest as
    which is:
    cal/gram carbs/gram
    Erythritol 0.2 .05
    Isomalt 2.0 .5
    Lactitol 2.0 .5
    Maltitol 2.1-3.0 .525-.75
    Mannitol 1.6 .4
    Polydextrose 1.0 .25
    Sorbitol 2.6 .65
    Xylitol 2.4-3.0 .6-.75

This is based on the theory that although they may have no effect on blood
glucose, if they are digested as carbs they must have an effect on ketosis.
Not sure this theory is valid but it makes sense to me. Carb control seems
to have two components, control of glucose/insulin spikes and inducing the
state of ketosis. Not sure which is more important to the success of the
diet but suspect it may vary among individuals depending on their insulin
    sensitivity.

  10. Tom, I apologize. I didn't mean to sound ungrateful and I commend you on
your weight loss. The fact that you don' t have to read labels is proof
    that you have worked hard.
My memory is not so good and have to read every label. I write down
everything the minute I eat it, lest I forget.

Deb, your advise is very helpful. I really think I spend so much time
"counting" that it stresses me out. I will forget counting for
awhile....the small portions, yes it's what I do.
As for the Steroid breathing med....my Pulmonologist assurred me it
would not effect weight loss. The med does not go to the bloodstream,
but is breathed directly into the lung by way of Nebulizer. I sure hope
he is telling the truth, 'cause the med greatly improves my pulmonary
functions. I'm up to 45 min on treadmill at 1.3 mph. and have lost one
    more pound!!

I'm glad to hear the breathing med is working so well for you and not
    interfering with weight loss.

Congratulations on another lost pound, already! You seem to be doing
well. Regular exercise really does make a big difference in how
    quickly you lose!

So ‘a calorie is a calorie is a calorie'
is not so meaningful after all: a
    carbohydrate calorie is obviously
much more fattening than a fat calorie.

So do calories count? Of course they do.
But some don't count half as much as others.

What's the rule of thumb for calories? 8x body weight for loss? If so
    1100-ish should work (on average).

It depends on how active you are, and most people vastly overestimate how
    active they are.
