What would be the best type of weight lifting regimen for me to add to
my cardio for the simple goal of losing weight and bodyfat? Adding
muscle size can wait until I am at my goal weight and add some
calories back in. What do you recommend?

BTW I work out alone, so I need to avoid anything that needs a spotter
    =)

    Dave

If the weights are very heavy (hard to lift) this causes you to gain
muscles mass and certainly strength. If you do many reps/sets of
medium to moderate weight it has an aerobic effect and you will lose
fat, while maintaining or slightly increasing muscle mass.

Plus i've noticed it in my own body. If I want more defined muscles I
power lift (as powerful as a 5 foot female can be) If I want to drop
some weight I increase my reps and sets but decrease my weights.

Dave i hope this is useful to you. This is what my trainer told me to
    tell you.

No. Simply lifting heavy weights won't cause one to gain mass. Also, doing
many reps/sets at a certain weight won't necessarily result in fat loss.

Nope, haven't used a PT in 7 years, she was standing there waiting for
her next appointment when I posed the question to her. I trust that
all of the trophies she's won (that are proudly displayed in the gym)
have something to do with her knowledge of the body and training
    techniques.

and since she must be wrong about this I'm guessing the fact that I
saw the results in action with my own body is an illusion???

I am a svelte 122 pounds of well defined muscle on a 5 foot frame.

finally I'd like to quote the most intelligent man I've ever had a

can. Note what prediction they make for the future, which ones are
vague, which ones are precise, which ones are subject to human
fallibility? Take into account that not one of them is perfect. Then
simply choose the one that in a FAIR comparison works. If methods are
superior in quite separate and independent fields, we are of course
free to choose several -- but not if they contradict one another. Far

You just did the same thing, Ray. However, in the second post (the one to
which you replied) I was not critizing, I was just correcting a point.
Lifting heavy weights in a routine isn't all that is required to grow and
doing lots of reps and sets isn't what it takes to make one lose fat. You
can grasp that notion? It's an important concept to get if you want a

Complete and utter BS. Rarely does weight training introduce

LOL, what I was trying to point out is that everybody is willing to
point out how much they know, or that they are an authority on
something. And everyone could be wrong. even you or trainers.

When you climb on a stair master and start working it has an aerobic
effect, if you did the same thing standing (on the floor) using medium
weights it will have the same aerobic effect. If you use a rowing
machine it has an aerobic effect. the same will happen if you use
medium weights on a sitting lat pull. doesn't take too much common
    sense to see that.

Better to do some cardio if you want an aerobic effect. Stick to weights for
strength and muscle building and minimizing muscle loss.

the original post was a question about how to lose weight and how to
gain muscle, but not too much. More focused on losing fat....

""What would be the best type of weight lifting regimen for me to add
to my cardio for the simple goal of losing weight and bodyfat? Adding
muscle size can wait until I am at my goal weight and add some
calories back in. What do you recommend?""

I still believe that the trainer I talked to was giving good advice.
Builders who use free weights know exactly what they do to your body.
And the same goes for runners (that's me) I don't really care for free
weights because it made my muscles to big. I swim, run, use a
stairmaster and if I do walk on a treadmill I'll do it for 1 hour at a
5% incline at 3.8 MPH. My Ultimate Heart Rate is around 180, this I
get at while running, however i get to 190 on a stairmaster. Don't
know what it is in the pool, I'm too damned busy swimming and enjoying
    it.

If you swing your arms it will have an aerobic effect, if you add
simple weights it has a better aerobic effect. if you keep adding
weights it will continue to increase your heart rate, until it gets to
the point that you can no longer swing your arms, thats when you are
building lean body mass, but not burning much fat. I've decided that
that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I don't. The OP really should just weight train without any regard for
weight loss (i.e., don't do anything special for weight loss). The cardio
and dieting will handle the fat loss, and the weight training will allow him
to retain (or possibly grow) muscle while possibly increasing strength.
