Do you appreciate that ?county? is a slippery word.

I trust that you will use the three traditional Ridings of Yorkshire with
their traditional boundaries, and ignore Heath's 1975 short lived
administrative regions. Humberside has thankfully already become extinct.

Nah, that's what long hot sunny days are for. Winter nights are for
frosty wild camping and star gazing! (At least when it's not raining)

Never had any interest in County Tops anyway. Counties are far too
arbitrary, I've got no respect for political divisions (I'd draw the
Welsh boundary a little differently, much to Richard Webb's chagrin),
and some of the high points are just plain *STUPID*.

If all county hight points were hill tops that wouldn't be so bad, but
due to the illogic of political divisions, some high points are totally
meaningless points on a slope half way up a hill.

The current set are more fun... lots of transient entities with
summits in places like Black country bramble patches (Sandwell, Dudley
and Wolverhampton - all good unhealthy fun)

I always remained true to the 1974 intention of revising local
government not county boundaries identities, but the ruddy things
caught on.

At least Herefordshire survived.. in common use and as a postal
address until the restoration.

And for as long as I live - Mickle Fell will be the highest hill in
Yorkshire, and you still get to do a nearby swamp as the trad Co.
Durham top.

And soon when another set of elections needs rigging we will have a
new set.

There will be errors and I have not got around to teasing out some of

Dawson et al have an up to date listing for Scotland and Wales.

The trad counties are easy to remember but there is one problem
(common with local authorities) Nottinghamshire.

The hp of Nottinghamshire is a bing, landscaped but still a bing. So
there has to be a consensus of human vrs naturaly made hills. Best do
both of them.

I am slowly working my way through them; I have made my task a little
harder by trying to link all the mainland ones up; i.e. link each
county top to another, directly or indirectly. I did not get as many
as I wanted done this year but I want to get to halfway next year if
at all possible ;*)

I've just checked the high point of the new county that I believe they
call Swansea, and, if you're reading this Simon, I'd just like to point
out that Alan Dawson has made a mistake with the name of this summit.
It's not Mynydd y Betws as listed in the Marilyns, it's Mynydd y Gwair.
I'd just like to spread this fact around. I have written to Alan about
this but he hasn't changed it.

The reason he picked Mynydd y Betws as the name was simply because on
the map it's written closer to the relevant summit (Penlle'r Castell),
but distance isn't everything. Mynydd Betws refers to the lower summit
just to the north. Penlle'r Castell is part of the larger area of
Mynydd y Gwair to the south.

I know this for a fact because I once reported a forest fire on Mynydd y
Gwair, not knowing the name at the time. When I asked the villagers (to
the north), they told me the name of the mountain was Mynydd y Betws, so
that's what I reported on the telephone. Hoping to get some pics I
followed the fire engine which stopped short of Mynydd y Gwair,
wondering where the fire was. I stopped to tell them where it was and
they replied, "that's not Mynydd y Betws, that's Mynydd y Gwair". So
there you have it, from the local fire service's mouth, as it were.

Mynydd y Betws is also outside the Swansea county boundary,
incidentally.

Like everyone he has it a Chwarel y Fan.. Forgive me but it seems
rather obvious that that is the name of the quarry that has taken a
chunk out of its summit.

Best way is to produce a bagging website and sneak in the names that
way. Also effective against SMC renamed Corbetts.
