I'm not into 'climbing' but would like crampons that'll do for general hillwalking. I don't want to spend any more money on boots either ... my wife reckons I have enough boots and other 'walking' paraphernalia to start a shop!
The latter pair will prove much easier to put on and take off without your fingers turning into puddings. I use Grivel G10s with a similar strap system (they'd be fine judging from my experience), and they are /much/ friendlier to get on than the older style straps.

If you only want them for walking and easy scrambling then 10 point crampons would be also be fine. The new style of fixing with a plastic toe bail as illustrated in the second pair above is ideal
What you must do is take the boots along and make sure the crampons do adjust to a good fit for your particular boots. There shouldn't be any lateral movement or rotation of the toe when the crampons are adjusted to the correct length and fitted.

Andy I have had a pair of Ice treks for about 7 or 8 years and use them 3 to 4 times a season. Did the CMD and Nevis in winter in them and they perform adequately for what an occasional winter walker will need. BUT they are hard to get on with frozen fingers as the straps are very fiddly, likewise when removing them as the straps and buckles tend to ice up and freeze needing a serious assault with the axe to free them. If these are your choices I would say for the extra few quid go for the ice riders and you will benefit from a much better system. Happy winter walking Graham
