Don't be fooled by huge zoom magnification... If it says 12X Zoom, it's probably 3X optical and 4x digital. Optical uses the lens, and digital *makes it up as it goes along* with poor results. Having said that, 3X is pretty good for most things!
Otherwise, a digital SLR is going to be expensive and you can get a 5M megapixal compact that prints up to A3 very nicely for sub £250... The Sonys are good, good lenses, good resolution. If you go shopping (Chris mentioned Jessops, good shop, but check against Amazon (http://tinyurl.com/6xjds) - you can get price match deals from Jessops/John Lewis and others from people!) ask about the storage, because some storage is really expensive and if you want to get loads of shots, you could be looking at hundreds of pounds to actually store the photos before you get back to the computer to see them off the camera!
I guess I'm really looking for a 5 megapixel compact with 3X optical zoom but beyond that I don't really want to be paying for lots of extras which I will never use. I wonder if the 64M memory card on my old Kodak might work in the new one. I'll take your advice and speak to Jessops.
If you save at top quality (i.e. RAW) you won't get many shots on a tiny card like that, maybe only 12-13. If you save at top jpeg quality you'll only get around 25. I'd recommend getting at least a 256 meg card.

No, not many at all... The last two weeks I was away up in Scotland the Lake District, and once I'd filled up the 1 Gb CF card (shooting in RAW) I had to start using my collection of 16 older 32Mb CF cards. Each 32Mb CF card could only hold 3 RAW shots - not being an expert on the subject, I'd presume, therefore, that a 64Mb card will only hold 6 or 7 RAW images. I was shooting film *and* digital, and thankfully I didn't run out of film, having taken 10+ rolls of Velvia.
If you save at top quality (i.e. RAW) you won't get many shots on a tiny card like that, maybe only 12-13. If you save at top jpeg quality you'll only get around 25. I'd recommend getting at least a 256 meg card.

They are only £17.49 for 256mb SD memory cards at www.7dayshop.com at the moment. This Guernsy Island shop is much cheaper than any UK shop and I have have used them a few times and can recommend them for quick turn round etc. (no connection with them)

My PDA is a Psion5mx. I have cheap cards which seem to work ok in my camera, but are prone to corruption in my PDA. I guess this is not uncommon, because shops used to say "ok" when I asked if I could try before buying, but now say "if you open the plastic packaging we can't refund".
However *some* cards say "guaranteed to work in everything", and those always in my experience do.

I have found the following firm very good as well as www.7dayshop.com http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp They are a major manufacturer of memory and will supply any type of memory post free in uk. Lots of advice available on their web site.

Sandisk as I recall. It's the one in Harrogate, have no idea if it's a company wide thing. I forgot to look in the Leeds one when I woz grocery shopping this evening.
