panoramic capability, and movie mode, v small and light, which has given
excellent results - £379 from Jessops.

This looks rather good actually. I was a bit miffed that the 300D
doesn't have a movie mode. Not that I ever used it much on the G3, but
it was useful occasionally. This looks even better, especially the
movie version;

Neither could I find out how many bits the sensor has. Is it 8 bit, 10
bit or what? How large are the TIFF files?

The combination of huge optical zoom (38-380 equiv), 30fps 640x480 movie
mode and light weight (280g), makes this look like an ideal lightweight
snap & movie camera. Good for taking on "exercise" walks or cycle rides
(when I don't want to do any proper photography) and light enough to be
carried along with the 300D for its movie capability.

I may consider getting one of these, but are there any other options?

movie capability and perhaps higher resolution?

KMinolta A2 or A200 but they lose out on the compact stakes. The A200
will do movies in VGA (800x600) as well as being a *little* smaller
and lighter than the A2. If you get one of these it's going to be an
either this or the 300D rather than both. OTOH if you get one of the
5Mpix compacts that should suit you just fine. I'd try and get one
that goes as wide as an equivalent 28mm for landscapes, though they
won't go as long at the tele end. The Olympus C-5060, Nikon Coolpix
5400 and Fujifim Finepix E510 all go that wide. Have a look around at

that take your fancy.

What about the Canon IXUS 500 - it has 5MP, and a hi res movie mode. Tiny
camera, good lens setup (approx 30-100mm equivalent) + digital zoom. Father
in law has one and cannot fault it. I have a 300D and if I were to buy an
additional camera for good snaps that I could drop into a pocket, then this
would be it. About £250 on amazon.co.uk.
