Seeing as they are all along the M25 near me where there are also the
variable speed limits, the answer must be yes.

Rumour has it that the M25 is a motorway and that has speed cameras to
enforce the variable limit. Elsewhere they can be found in roadworks
areas. Cumbria police use mobile vans on bridges to catch offenders.

The reason they are not more common on motorways despite over half of
car drivers regularly exceeding the posted limits is that the guidelines
say that cameras should be used at accident blackspots. Claims that the
existing ones are all at accident blackspots are a pack of lies but even
the most committed of anti-car nuts would have an impossible job
convincing even another of the same ilk that motorways are riddled with
accident blackspots.

I noticed three cameras set up as a temporary installation on a minor
road bridging the Manchisstoh Outer Ring Road (M60).

I assume that each was trained on one lane of the motorway, and it
baffled me. Maybe I'll drive under them with a large rude notice on
my car, or wearing a gorilla mask....

There are lots of cameras on motorways, tell your shed - especially in
50mph sections.

Sorry, but this is definitely not correct. There might be some for
this purpose, but there are many that *do* measure speed. One of my
colleagues will attest to that: he's lost his driving licence thanks
to the M25 speed cameras.

Beware of the Tameside cameras, some of them are black and
inconspicuously placed, but some are placed close to a warning (SLOW -
30MPH) signs, which give you fair notice.

Sorry, but this is definitely not correct. There might be some for
this purpose, but there are many that *do* measure speed. One of my
colleagues will attest to that: he's lost his driving licence thanks
to the M25 speed cameras.

The variable speed limits on the M25 are *very* clearly marked. Get

There are separate detectors too. The gantries with speed cameras have big
camera pictures on them, all the gantries have those painted lines after
them just to slow the traffic.
Often wondered, if you sped through the lot you could easily lose your
licence with a big points total on one trip.

I was pretty sure that /all/ cameras have to be yellowed. After all,
most (all?) are and I can't believe that they would have redone all the
old ones unless they had to.

The signs without cameras aren't bluffing signs, but relate to mobile
speed cameras. The regulations are that if a mobile speed camera is to
be used in the same place more than twice (I think) in two months then
signs have to be put up.

This, of course, gives them ample opportunity to establish bluffing
signs :-)
