Old Winchester Hill is described as "Owned and managed by English Nature" They manage it with some fairly draconian restrictions including banning picknicking on the embankment. I've been trying to find out how Old winchester Hill came to be in public hands. Can anybody help?

Must be a fragile environment, easily susceptible to erosion.

Well, that's what it says on the signs put up by English Nature, along with signs suggesting that as it was used by the Army for mortars and the suchlike during the First World War, the chances of stepping on an unexploded shell are extremely good, so stay on the upper paths (the warning is based on people accidentally discovering the said ordinance). Can't have helped the erosion much.
