Wore a recently purchased pair of brasher leather boots over the weekend and
part of the journey involved some off path roaming through dense undergrowth
thick with brambles, the thorns have severly scoured the boots toes and they
now resemble a chamois leather, are they ruined ?

Doubt it. If they are Gortex lined then there will be little reduction in
water resistance, if not then make sure they are well treated and they
should be OK.
Sue cut into her Zamberlans very deeply where the toes bend when she didn't
see a length of barbed wire in the grass but the boots still function
although they do now let water penetrate in prolonged exposure.
