The maps are very good. Martin Collins "Walking the French Alps:GR5"
Published by Cicerone is very good, about £11. Did the southern bit
last summer.

Did some of the southern end in 2003. Topos and IGN maps are very
good. Easily purchased locally or in advance from places like The Map
Shop in Upton on Severn

I've done the bit in the Alsace.
As others said, the IGN maps are very good.

But you won't need to look at it in the Northern Vosges as there seemed
to be a pointer every 50 metres or so.
