  1. Hi.

In an effort to reduce the weight of the gear I carry, I'm thinking of
getting a lightweight waterproof breathable jacket. I see that Field & Trek
have the Montane Hydra-Lite jacket at 50 pounds. Does anyone have experience
or opinions of this jacket? The Superfly also looks good, but then there are
175 reasons why it should be!

    Regards: Jim Ford

  2. Cotswold Outdoor are doing the Berghaus Paclite Pro Jacket for £99, down
from £160. I have one and have been quite impressed.

Small point to most maybe but I wouldn't buy another jacket with elasticated
    cuffs.

    Why not?

Because they can be uncomfortable, restrict ventilation and make it harder
to roll the sleeves up. My girlfriend & I have still got old matching
Craghoppers Pakka jackets (cute huh?) except that one's got elasticated
sleeves and the other has got velcro adjustable ones. We used to have a
game of slyly trying to swap them over without each other noticing because
we both disliked the elasticated sleeves one. They've been relegated to the
back of the wardrobe ever since she gave up being sly and resorted to
    violence. Vicious woman.

    Ugh! Me neither!

I have cut the cuffs of my fleece and hemmed them again after suffering
    horribly with no ventilation.

    Hello Jim,

You might like to consider a Rainshield Ref: 1021 from Country Covers
    at http://www.country-covers.com/

    Priced at £65.00

I purchased one of these a couple of months ago and am delighted with
it. It is extremely lightweight and compacts into a small compression
bag. Made from ripstock nylon with a totally waterproof inner. I
tried it out in some of those August storms and it works perfectly.
Ideal as a lightweight totally waterproof outer garment. Where weight
and compactness is important. Olive Green in colour.

Oh iI forgot to mention, 'velco'd cuffs' not elasticated, hood and
    waterproof zipped pockets.

Halfords bike shops were doing some for £14.99 - I bought one for use on the
bike. Certainly fits the "cheap" requirement!

If you're a medium and want one in [new] graphite then the factory
shop has one for 140ukp, its a sample. I saw it last week and its in
as-new condition, phone them up if you're int'd (oh, word to the
int'd, prices are going up with the new range - Crimbo/New Year
    release)

The -Lite range (including the Super-Fly) although each a very thin
material is reckoned to have good abrassion resistance; geeza in the
fs told me of the test they do on new/prospective fabrics to evaluate
    abrasion resistance.

Didn't see a Hydra-lite (but wouldn't have paid it much heed because I
don't care much for smock-style jackets, etc.. I did look at the V2
which I was well impressed with; its not light-lightweight but did
strike me as extremely well made/designed. The elements I liked most
was the stronger material on the shoulders, you can't see from the
photos on the 'net but there is a similar panel across the small of
the back; obviously with pack-carrying in mind. It also had copious
pockets, including two that also formed part of the venting system
(open both to provide cross-chest airflow). The zips on these were
    also double-headed giving access flexibility.

ATEOTD I didn't buy a jacket, if I'd had, and money was no object, I'd
have gone for the Super-Fly, it had an excellent cut about it. The V2
was a close second, but its not light-weight (although its not heavy),
but it looks well designed to my eye (no recommendation in itelf, I
    admit ;-)

In terms of the other -Lite ranged jackets (and the same
style/material from all other manufacturers) I'm nervous about the
durability of the material that would lie under shoulder straps, etc..
If anyone has actual field-experience I'd be interested in their
    experiences

In which case it might be worth looking at the new ME Matrix. It's
similar to the old Paclite Firefly but with XCR rather than Paclite at
all the wear/scramble points. Got the usual excellent ME hood and good,
active fit. Bought mine when I saw it last week (store had only
received it a few hours earlier), and returned the Montane Superfly that
I had received a couple of days earlier. Wore it at the weekend in
atrocious conditions and it was superb.
