In general most GPSs use the American GPS satellite constelation and will work

My Garmin Geko 201 has just been working very well whilst I was walking in
Switzerland - so long as I was clear of any trees.
The Swiss have a grid system very similar to the British one. Since even my 9
year old Garmin 45 can use the Swiss system, I would guess that all Garmin's do.
For walking, I found that each local tourist office would publish its own
1:25,000 map for walkers which show the Swiss Grid system. The maps are based
on the Swiss National/military maps but have the paths/walking routes
highlighted. The maps cost SF 15-25
The maps correlate well with the yellow signposts for walkers.
The National/military maps can be bought as well, but are not as clear as
Ordanance Survey maps. Further they will show paths which may be quite dangerous
(IMHO) and are not highlighted on the walking maps.
Typically the tourist office maps are only available in the LOCAL tourist office
(and maybe a local bookshop) They tend to be for the areas surrounding the
tourist office and may or may not overlap with the map for the adjacent office.
The tourist offices also sometimes publish what I would call a ski map type
guide to the paths. (i.e a drawn picture of the mountains on which the paths are
marked. Not to scale!)
Kummerly+ Frey also publish 1:50,000 maps. See http://www.swisstravelcenter.ch/

If you take a mobile phone as well as a GPS then there is a good chance that you
can summon help and say exactly where you are.
I bought my Geko 210 from www.gpsw.co.uk. I use it with rechargeable 800mAh
batteries. If the unit is kept on all the time a set of two batteries last 5-6
hours. I always carried a spare set.
