  1. I am a 49 year old male who runs 25 to 30 miles per week. I am in the 233
lb, range. Been at this weight and mileage for a few years now.

Something that happens to me when I take time off from running: I end up
with shin pain during my runs about 2 to 3 weeks into my return to running.
Mid shin and radiating to the outside. The pain is located where splints
take place but is different as they never hurt away from running, only when
running (the times I have had splints is the polar opposite, no pain when
running...lots of pain when not running). A short stop and stretch
alleviates the pain, and I go on happily. This takes about 3 to 4 weeks to
work through and then shins are no longer a problem.

Anyone here have any idea what I am dealing with. Any exercises that might
help. Does anyone think some resistant training for the shin area is in
order. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

I am right now in the middle of one of these bouts of shin pain and this
would be an excellent time to see if there is a remedy.

  2. ....based on the content of your post, i want to know more about the shoes
you're wearing and the miles, on them, etc. it's hard to diagnosis these
matters online however your age + shin splints imo = orthotics time.

    i'd look into orthotics....

Yep, I used to get that allot.
Do exaggerated toe taps until your shin muscles are burning real good. Do a set to the inside and outside.
Your pain will soon fade after a week or so if you keep at it.
