One option: suck it up just this once and drop 100 or so at a decent running
store for shoes and maybe pads that are likely to match your legs. Try to
pick a time when they're not busy. It took me a few pairs over several
months to find what worked for me (Asics 2070, now 2090, + arch support
pads). The Runners World advice on shoe type based solely on arch height
doesn't work well with my leg geometry, and may not work well for you
either. After that, don't feel too guilty watching Oshman's (or your local
equivalent) for sales on the right shoes. It's not too hard to find shoes
for well below list if you watch and are ready to buy them before your old
ones run out.

Which canal? Dirt is good, but watch you ankles. I find it helps to
consciously keep a little isometric pressure on the foot muscles to be ready
for an unexpected early or late landing.

Excellent advice, I'm goign to piggy-back on this post. You may save in the
long run by choosing the right shoes in the first place. You really need to
try the shoes and run around in them to know that they fit.

What kind of wear pattern on your old shoes? That info is vital in selecting
new shoes.

I know if you belong to that Run America Club or whatever it is that Road
Runners Sports has you can run in them for 60 days and return them for full
credit no questions asked. Does any place else offer anything even close. I
bought a pair at one of your typical mall stores once and they were absolutely
terrible. Wore them one time and they were actually painful, the store refused
to take them back or give me any kind of credit. So much for local shopping in
my neighborhood, I've only bought through RRS after that experience.

When I picked up the Gel Magics at the local running store (these are full retail
even online and the guy gave me a good price), the store owner let me take them
out for a run ("take your time!"😉, and also invited me to try three other
models in addition to the ones I asked to try on. This guy has relied beavily on
customer loyalty -- he's a top local runner himself and probably understands that
the potential for return business trumps making a fast dollar by selling something
the customer doesn't want. Many of his customers know that online stores are a
tad cheaper.

The funny thing about footlocker is that the online footlocker is vastly superior
to the retail store. You can return your shoes *to their retail outlets* and they
have an exceptional range of flats and track shoes (better than RRS!).

Forget your typical mall shoe stores, if you want to go the retail route, you really
need to go to a specialty running store. For example, if the store does not have
several different racing flats and light trainers on the shelf, forget it.

Mall stores are [censored]. Find a local running store. You'll know it
because you'll ask for shoes for running track and you'll get a
selection.

Next step is to become friendly with the shop owner. Ask if they have
a team you could train with. Volunteer for their race(s), be just
friendly.

I have relationships with 2 different stores and returns are no
problem in a reasonable time. I get a price better than RRS by a few
bucks.

I'm lucky to live in an area where there are running stores in my
vicinity.

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Like I said in my past post I only
jog 5 days a wk, 4mi mon/wed/fri and 2mi tue and thurs in hard dirt road
along the canal, i have been jogging on and off since i was 18yrs old (just
amateur), sometimes with a 1yr gap , i currently use these "Rebook
Classics", their all leather and never gave me any problems whatsoever, but
they are getting pretty used up, the back side of the shoes are getting a
beaten, i had them for the past 4yrs lol , If my current running shoes
didn't give any problems for the last 4yrs, do you all recommend i buy
another pair of old rebook classics?, hope they still sell those lol. Thanks

PS. I heard Assics have pretty good running shoes and at a good price too.

Then you must live deep in Appalachia and never made it past second
