I'm hoping to do a fall half marathon. I'm looking for mid October to End November (give or take a couple of weeks). Any votes for the best one for that time period? Best route, best goodies, best t-shirt, best post-race... I'm looking for a fast course, which for me means rolling hills. Big city or small town, no matter. USA would be prefered (specifically where US Air flies) but international wouldn't be ruled out. I'm trying to make it a weekend trip.
There is a half marathon in Harrisburg PA on September 12th. The course runs along the Susquehanna river which is a beautiful area. I've never actually run the half marathon but used to travel to Harrisburg on business and thoroughly enjoyed running along the river, its a beautiful area. I also managed to win a few bucks playing in a weekly nine ball tournament in the same area if you happen to be a pool player.

Is that the Steamtown marathon? Or am I thinking some other Pennsylvania city?

Define "pool player". Yes I can play pool in much the same way I ran with Grete Waitz in my first marathon. Me thinks I'll stick to running than embarass myself in a pool hall.

The Steamtown marathon starts in Forest City and ends in Scranton.

I tend to avoid NYRRC races since they are so expensive for non members and are skimpy on the post race food. Shame I don't like smoked salmon though.
Thanks for the ideas, Andy
Oh. The BAA half looks full too. My wife is due on October 12, so there is a good chance that I'll be getting rid of my number. What was I thinking? Really, I don't see what the big deal is. I'd be going for a run on the same path that day anyway. The race is just a little later in the day and starts in the opposite direction.

Boston Athletic Association half marathon is October 10. I run parts of that course every day and will never tire of it.
Grete's Gallop in NYC, Central Park is nice, earlier though, October 3rd.
Oh, post race food at Grete's Gallop is bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon.

So what do you do instead ? The Jersey races are even more expensive, usually not chipped, and have weaker competition.
I ran one of the long island races (organised by finish line road race technicians), which was chipped, well organised and reasonably priced, but it was one hell of a commute.
I just did a "fall" 9 miler a month or so ago, and I can't imagine why you'd want to do that. In my fall I broke a rib in three places, and just got back to regular mileage a few days ago.

I race in Queens and LI mostly, when the spirit moves me. Less of a commute for me. I also prefer non-chipped races. It is the ludite in me that can't embrace that technology.
A race near me costs around $18. Which gets me a t-shirt/dust rag and usually some good post race refreshments and typically raffles (which I rarely win). The NYRRC can learn lots from other races in post race refreshments. Plus I know many more people and can socialize more on LI.

$20 for a half marathon is too expensive? Less than a dollar per kilometer.
Too expensive for what you get. The NYRRC post race refreshment typically consists of water. For the same $20 in a local race there is usually some more substantial feedings. There is a free winter trail relay on Long Island that provides chicken soup, cookies, and a hot beverage. Along with raffles.
As you may have figured I prefer my races to be more of a social gathering.
