I know the story about seeing your doctor before you put on a pair of shoe and try to make it to your car so you can drive to the store. Basically I have been a strong hiker for most of my life and my heart is good. I had a back operation 18 months ago to remove a tumor so no real surgery involved for the vertebrae. Of course it left me with a multitude of other problems, mostly head problems. Well at 195 pounds and 6'1", I figure I should go down to 180 pounds before I take one running step and until then just walk.

There's nothing wrong with walking. It burns about the same amount of calories per mile as running. I don't think that 195 is too heavy to at least do some minimal easy running. Here's a good plan to get you started that combines walking and running: http://www.halhigdon.com/beginrunner/plan.htm

At 195 and 6'1" you certainly can be running..... or more accurately you can be jogging. Try to get out 3 times a week and mix up walking and jogging.... with mostly walking. After a few months try to do more jogging than walking. For some reason, 3 miles 3 times a week seems to work for most runners I know. And finally "Go Slow" and shuffle rather than bounce. Get good shoes.... Don't have to be expensive. Don't be tough on yourself... If you need to skip a day or two No Big Deal. This is suppose to be fun. If you don't change your eating habits and start a running program I would think you will drop the weight pretty darn fast (like 2-4 months). If you feel that you want to be down to 180 before you start that is fine too.

I am in my fifties also.. and I second the suggestion, get good shoes, usually something close to the hundred dollar range. At our age it is a matter of necessity. And go slow, build up endurance, watch out for the summer heat. Eventually running will make you feel 20 years younger... it is a "magic pill".
