First Ironman suggestions

I only have personal experience at the Half IM distance, but if it's a flat
course you're looking for there can't be many flatter than Pineman.

If you're set on an "official" Ironman race and not just Ironman
distance, everyone says IM Florida is the ticket. Of course, many here
will tell you that 112 miles of flat biking = no rest and a lot more
work than you think. At least on a hilly course you get to use different
muscle groups and you get to coast a little.

Why?

I chose IM Canada for my first IM because of the challenge and the
reported beauty of the course. I wasn't disappointed.

What memory do you want of the bike course? Scenic views and inspiring
climbs, or a head down, grind-it-out over endless boring flats?

If you want a memorable ride, do IMC, Lake Placid, or the Great
Floridian (not to be confused with IM Fla.) There are others, too, but
I can only speak personally of those three courses.

The new Arizona race might be worth investigating; I haven't looked at the
course profile for that race yet.

Roughly the day after the race. It opens on site the day after, and
around then for online registration. Lake Placid is probably full
already, and supposedly IM Canada closes from on-site registration
before online registration opens.

IM Wisconsin and IM Florida might be your only online options for 2005
(or maybe Arizona; I don't know when that opens, but you can check
ironmanlive.com). You can do a non-M-dot race anytime you want.

if you don't find a place in either of the suf´ggested and you want to go
overseas.....try the IM Austria...nice place and a beautiful landscape
including a fast course.....just ask some who has been there....I have
talked to lots of amarican startes and they has been more than happy to
start here...maybe I'm not objective :-) but this year we had about 100.000
spectators and they cheered me to sub 11....

I had fun and guess what I'll try to start in canada next year :-)) should
be as nice as here...

WRT IM Can, I believe registration opens the day after the race. People in
person can register two people, so if you know someone up there, they can
register for you.

Also, there are some long distance races that are qualifers for IMC, and
IMLP. Check out http://www.ironmannorthamerica.com/qualify.html

There is also a lottery for IMC.

If you are not hung-up on Mdot then you might look at the Vineman. No need
to do Mdot and possibly better not to be bothered with all the hype.
